BACK-TO-BACK
Last Friday, the Broncos traveled to Cedar City, Utah to face the Thunderbirds. The Broncos were trailing through the first three rotations but made a stellar comeback in the final rotation, where they were on beam. Combined with the Thunderbirds' falls on floor, Boise State executed a huge come-from-behind victory thanks to an extremely strong performance from the beam lineup.
The Broncos were on bars in the first rotation and had two uncharacteristic falls, but freshman Alexis Stokes shone in her first collegiate road contest, scoring a team-leading 9.800, good enough for second place on the event. On vault, the Broncos put together 48.900 as a team. Sarah Means was crowned vault champion with a score of 9.875.
Shani Remme earned a share of the floor title with a score of 9.850.
In the final rotation, Remme had a nearly flawless routine and finished with a 9.900, giving her the event title. Means tied for second with a 9.875. Courtney McGregor took the all-around crown, notching a 39.150.
SERIES HISTORY
Boise State leads the all-time series against Southern Utah 39-23. The Broncos and Thunderbirds last faced each other last week at Southern Utah and have won the last six contests. The Broncos swept SUU in 2018 dual meet competition.
IN THE RANKINGS
For the second week in a row, the Blue and Orange remain in the top 10 in the nation with an average score of 195.900, according to the Road to Nationals rankings released Monday. The Thunderbirds moved up to No. 38 this week with an average score of 194.013. Boise State is now the highest-ranked team in the MRGC, with BYU at No. 16 and Utah State at No. 34. The Broncos are also the second-highest ranked team in the western region, below only No. 2 UCLA.
CONFERENCE HONORS
With last week's 9.900 on beam, Remme made another appearance in the weekly MRGC awards as the Beam Specialist of the Week. Means garnered co-Vault Specialist of the Week after winning the vault title at Southern Utah last week with a score of 9.875.
FEELING FRESH
Newcomers Hope Masiado, Samantha Smith, and Alexis Stokes have proven to be vital pieces in the Bronco lineup. Stokes never wavered on bars last week after her teammates had a rough start and came out with a second-place finish. In the opening meet, Smith provided a 9.800 on vault, tying for second with veteran McGregor. Masiado was close behind with a 9.725. The Broncos would finish that meet with the highest season-opening score in program history.
Freshmen Tessa DePasquale, a bars specialist, and all-arounder Dani Shafer look to make appearances later this season.
UP NEXT
The Bronco gymnastics team begin a four-week road trip next Friday with a tri-meet at San Jose State with UC Davis. This is the second time they will meet San Jose State. The meet will be at 8 p.m. MT at The Event Center in San Jose, Calif.
