Boise State women's tennis team put up a good fight, but lost on the final match to Weber State 3-4
BOISE, Idaho (1/25/19) – The Boise State women's tennis team lost to Weber State 4-3, Friday in a tight match that came down to a final showdown on court one.
The Broncos started well in doubles play after dropping the first match on court two, rallying back to win the matches on courts one and three in close contests to steal the doubles points away from the Wildcats.
The Broncos' freshmen duo of Frankie Trella and Emily Strande won a hard-fought contest on court three over Cali Fuller and Megan Lombardi 6-3. Meanwhile, Boise State's No. 1 pairing of Wilhelmina Palmer and Lilian Poling were tied at 4-4 in their match, but grinded out the win over Weber State's Caitlin Herb and Yuuna Ukita 6-4 to secure the point for the Broncos and give their team the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Nothing came easy for the Broncos in the singles matches. Vanessa Timm, the No. 4 player for the Broncos, won the first singles match of the day by defeating Morgan Dickason in a tightly contested 6-2, 6-4 match to give Boise State an early 2-0 lead.
Weber State quickly retaliated by winning the singles matches on courts six, three and 4, two of them in two sets, to take its first lead over Boise State 3-2.
In the No. 2 matchup, Poling showed impressive grit by battling back after losing the first set of her match to get the win 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 to even the score once again, 3-3, setting up a winner-take-all on court one.
At the No. 1 position, Palmer gave it her all in the three-set match against Weber State's Caitlin Herb, but in the end the Wildcat got the better hand and walked away with a 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 win and the team victory as well.
The Broncos now drop to 1-1 on the season but have a chance to rebound tomorrow, as they make a quick turnaround to face Lewis-Clark State at 8 a.m. at Boas Indoor Tennis Center.
