Streak Snapped At 10 As Broncos Fall At Wyoming

1/26/2019 4:01:00 PM | Women's Basketball

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Boise State had its 10-game winning streak snapped Saturday, shooting just 36.7 percent and getting into early foul trouble while falling, 64-52, at Wyoming.

The Broncos (15-3, 6-1 MW) held the Mountain West's top 3-point shooting team to just one triple in four attempts in the first half, and three makes in 11 attempts for the game, but the Cowgirls capitalized on 22 Bronco fouls and went 21-for-27 from the line. Wyoming (11-5, 4-3 MW) went 11-for-14 from the line in the first half, and went 11-for-20 from inside the arc, building a 36-21 halftime lead.

Boise State managed to string together a 7-0 run midway through the third quarter, behind a 3-pointer from Braydey Hodgins, to cut the Cowgirl lead to 43-32, and Sofía Galerón scored four points in a quarter-ending seven-point run to get the Broncos within eight at 50-42 entering the fourth.

But a 1-for-5 start from the field in the fourth hampered the Broncos. Wyoming got its lead back to 11 at 57-46 on a Karla Erjavec triple, and the Broncos wouldn't get any closer than eight the rest of the way. Riley Lupfer converted a three-point play with 4:56 to go to get the Broncos to within nine at 58-49, but Boise State couldn't capitalize, going 1-for-10 the rest of the way.

"We didn't play very well offensively. I thought [Wyoming] was clearly more engaged than we were in competing today," said Boise State head coach Gordt Presnell. "We tried to establish post presence and we couldn't even enter the ball effectively. When you're struggling from the perimeter and you can't get the ball inside, you're going to have a bad recipe."

For the first time since Feb. 25, 2015 at New Mexico, Boise State didn't have a player score in double digits Saturday, as the trio of Jayde Christopher, Galerón, and Lupfer each had seven to pace the team. Wyoming disrupted the Bronco offense, as the Broncos passed out just nine assists on 22 field goals in the contest and went a season-worst 2-for-15 from 3-point range.

Boise State committed nine fouls in the opening quarter, and Wyoming took advantage, going 9-for-11 from the line. The Cowgirls also shot 50.0 percent from the field in the period to take a 22-14 lead.

The hole just got deeper for the Broncos in the second quarter, as they managed just three field goals in 13 attempts, and turned it over three times while Wyoming again went 6-for-12 shooting. Bailee Cotton, who finished with 14 points despite just 2-for-7 shooting, went 10-for-12 from the line on the day, including 7-for-8 in the first half with nine points. Marta Gomez was a perfect 6-for-6 from the stripe and hit just one triple while leading the Cowgirls with 15 points.

The Broncos cut the Cowgirl lead to six at 22-16 on Marta Hermida's layup, but Boise State would then suffer a scoring drought of 4:32 while Wyoming rode a pair of Quinn Weidemann layups to an 8-0 run and a 12-point lead with 4:08 left in the half. Tess Amundsen finally snapped Boise State's cold streak with a turnaround bucket in the paint with 2:38 left in the half, and Jayde Christopher added a three-point play with 1:11 to go, but the Broncos could not string together enough stops to cut into the double-digit deficit.
