Game Notes

UP NOW: Boise State (6-8, 1-0) will play its first conference home game when it welcomes San Diego State (8-5, 0-0) to Taco Bell Arena, Saturday, Jan. 5 for an 8 p.m. tip. The Broncos took down Wyoming on the road, Wednesday, while the Aztecs opened league play with a bye.

WATCH: Saturday's matchup will broadcast on CBS Sports Network. Cater Blackburn (play-by-play) and Pete Gillen (analyst) will work the game.

LISTEN: The game will air on 670 AM KBOI or on the TuneIn app with Bob Behler and Abe Jackson on the call.

LAST TIME OUT: The Broncos played a complete game at 7,220 feet, gradually pulling away from the Cowboys and winning 69-55 Wednesday night in Laramie at the Arena-Auditorium. Alex Hobbs played a well-rounded game with 17 points to go with seven rebounds, six assists and two steals – all of which were team highs.

Justinian Jessup was exceptional, as well, netting 14 points thanks to a 4-of-7 effort from behind the arc. Derrick Alston also made it into double figures with 10 points. David Wacker also had one of his best games of the season, playing a season-high 27 minutes and pulling in seven rebounds to tie for the team high.

Boise State had the 33-22 lead at the half and never looked back in the second, extending its lead to as much as 22 with 6:37 to play (62-40). The Blue and Orange also took care of the ball, committing a season-low six turnovers.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE: The Aztecs were 8-5 in the nonconference season, securing a couple signature wins against Xavier (Nov. 20) and BYU (Dec. 22). Devin Watson leads the team in points (15.3 ppg) and assists (5.4 apg) while Jalen McDaniels is second in points (14.8 ppg) and is tops in rebounding (7.5 rpg).

SDSU closed out the noncon slate with a 65-60 win over CSUN (Jan. 1), rebounding from a 82-61 home loss to Brown (Dec. 29).

THE SERIES: San Diego State has the 11-6 advantage in the all-time series, but the Broncos have been winners of five of the last eight matchups. Boise State has naturally fared better at home against the Aztecs, recording a 4-3 record.

HISTORIC GAME LAST YEAR: The sold out crowd of 10,874 that were in attendance at last season's home game against SDSU proved to be one of a couple difference makers on the night, as the Broncos needed every last bit of energy to secure the 83-80 victory (Jan. 13, 2018).

The historic difference maker came in the form of Chandler Hutchison. The senior played one of the best games in program history in scoring a school record 44 points, going 15-of-21 from the field (including a 7-of-10 night from behind the arc). The 44 was the fifth-most points in a conference game in Mountain West history.

GUARDING AT A HIGH LEVEL: The 69-55 win against Wyoming was highlighted by a solid defensive effort, as the Broncos held the Cowboys to just 35.0 percent shooting from the field (14-of-40) – the team's fifth game this season holding an opponent to under 40 percent shooting. Most impressively, however, was the team's effort against Justin James, who entered the game averaging a Mountain West-best 22.4 points per game. He was limited to a season-low seven points on 1-of-14 shooting.

KEEPING THE OPPONENT TO UNDER 60: Boise State is 4-0 this season when keepings opponents to under 60 points, while one of its other wins came when Central Washington was just above the threshold with 62 points. The team's average scoring defense of 68.0 is currently fourth in the Mountain West.

COMPLETE GAME FROM HOBBS: The junior certainly made the most out of his 36 minutes on the court against the Cowboys, as he secured team highs (or tied for the team high) in points (17), rebounds (7), assists (6) and steals (2). He is just the second Bronco this season to lead the team in points, rebounds, assists and steals in the same game, as RJ Williams also did so against Grand Canyon (Dec. 1).

JESSUP FROM DISTANCE: Jessup continues to shoot the ball well from behind the arc, as he is top 10 in the league right now in 3-pointers per game (2.6 – 5th) and 3-point field goal percentage (41.1 – 7th). The four threes from the Longmont, Colo., native once again pushed the Broncos to victory, as the team is 4-1 this season in games when he makes four or more threes.
