Broncos Drop Close Match with Tigers

10/25/2019 8:42:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BOISE, Idaho - It took until the 82nd minute for either team to find a goal, Friday at Boas Soccer Complex. In the end, Boise State women's soccer dropped just its third match of the year, 1-0 to Colorado College.

"Today was a bit of an off day from an energy and emotional standpoint," said Boise State head coach Jim Thomas. "It was a little bit offbeat from what I thought we were going to get, certainly from what I was sensing in the locker room beforehand and in warmup. But the players will have a chance to talk about that and we will listen and see what we can do to rectify it on Sunday."

Despite outshooting the Tigers 18-8, the Broncos were unable to capitalize on any of them. Colorado College eventually scored off a feed through the box to a sprinting Tiger forward.

"The better part of the game was played in the attacking half for us and certainly the introduction of Jules [Julie Lewis] gave us mobility and while we weren't able to win the ball in the air we were able to win it in the open field which was good," explained Thomas.

The match was a defensive grind throughout as both teams looked for an opening and each defensive line repulsed the advances. Both teams managed to put seven shots on target, with the first six on either side turned away by the goalkeepers. Colorado College snuck their final threat past Boise State goalkeeper Sydney Smith, just Smith's ninth goal against of the year, the fewest in the Mountain West this season. Tigers goalkeeper Molly Hiniker stopped Morgan Stone's last gasp in the 87th minute to preserve the clean sheet for the visitors.

"This is a group that has 15 wins under its belt and it's not the first time we've lost a game," said Thomas. "It's not the first time we've had to come back and win another game and there is certainly enough talent and chemistry. With enough on the line I think we will come back strong on Sunday."

Should San Diego State tie each of its next two games, the Broncos could still clinch the regular season title with a win on Sunday.

"The door is open for a team like San Diego State to catch us and that leaves us in a precarious position, it's imperative now we get back to a winning streak on Sunday," said Thomas.

The Broncos are back at Boas on Sunday as they host the United States Air Force Academy at 1 p.m. MT. Boise State will celebrate senior day for nine student-athletes playing their final regular-season home match. The Broncos, who will play host to the 2019 Mountain West Tournament Nov. 5-9, are assured of at least one more home match by virtue of already clinching a spot in the six-team tournament.
