Broncos Edge Falcons on Senior Day

10/27/2019 6:29:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BOISE, Idaho - On a senior day where nine seniors were honored, the Boise State women's soccer team won it's 16th game of the season in thrilling fashion, defeating the United States Air Force Academy, 3-2, Sunday at Boas Soccer Complex.

"We play well every week, we have great players and they always play good soccer," said head coach Jim Thomas. "The team was laser focused, they didn't get too emotional, they know how important the game was to the program, and they know the moment was important to history."

In her final regular season home match senior Raimee Sherle put on a show, blasting 12 shots on the day, one more than the entire Falcon offense combined. Sherle put six of her shots on goal and two in the back of the net.

Sherle's first goal came in the 20th minute after fellow senior McKenna Kynett fed a pass ahead to Sherle who corralled it just inside the 18-yard box before sending it home with her right foot to give the Broncos a 1-0 edge.

Air Force scored in the 42nd minute to tie things up going into the half. Then in the 61st minute, Sherle again sent Boise State into the lead, dribbling through the box and past two defenders before a left-foot finish at the near post to put the Broncos up 2-1.

"This is the Mountain West, you really never know what's going to happen," said Sherle. "I think it was important that we just kept our head in it and we put away opportunities that we could put away."

Again the Falcons responded, knotting the match at two in the 67th minute. With the clock winding down under five minutes to play, senior forward Kristina Serres drove the ball down into the right corner. She doubled back and found Emily Curry at the corner of the 18-yard box. Curry took four steps to her left and fired off a shot that sailed just inside the top-left corner of the goal.

For Curry, its her second goal of the season and her second game winner in the last four matches. Sherle now has a team-best 12 goals on the year. For Kynett, who assisted on Sherle's goal it was her third assist this season. Serres now has a team-leading five assists on the year.

The Broncos now prepare for the final regular season game of the year as they travel to Logan, Utah, to face Utah State. Boise State remains tied atop the Mountain West at 24 points with San Diego State. A win at Utah State would secure at least a share of the Mountain West regular season title.

The Blue and Orange have already secured a first-round bye in the Mountain West tournament, which will be held at Boas Soccer Complex, Nov. 5-9.

"If we have a crowd like today, I don't know that we are going to be stopped," said Thomas. They lifted us when we needed lifting, they certainly sensed the moment in the second half and they gave us the grit to lift us over a really difficult opponent today."

The next opportunity to watch the Broncos will be Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. MT.
