Sherle Strikes Late, Broncos Win Seventh Straight

10/3/2019 11:22:00 PM | Women's Soccer

SAN JOSE, Calif. - In a rematch of last season's Mountain West semifinal game, Boise State women's soccer flipped the script defeating San Jose State 1-0, Thursday night.

"Today was really hard, San Jose State are really good. Much, much better than their record," said head coach Jim Thomas.

In typical Boise State fashion, the defense was tough and shots were few and far between for both teams through the first half. The Broncos had all seven of the games shots at halftime. The Blue and Orange finished the day with eight shots on goal to the Spartans' one.

"There is a coming of age piece with this group, about finding new ways to overcome opponents," said coach Thomas. "The things we have seen in these first 12 games have required us to be so malleable as a group that we are starting to lean back on the last 12 games to help us win games."

The Boise State defense has stifled opponents throughout the year, allowing just five goals all season and averaging less than 10 opponent shot attempts per game. Much of the defense stems from a solid core of midfielders and defenders led by a trio of seniors, Raven Sweeney, Emily Curry, and McKenna Kynett.

"There are a lot of people making things happen, that don't show up on stat sheets, Raven, Emily and McKenna were absolutely outstanding in their ability to win the midfield battle," explained coach Thomas.

However, the game remained deadlocked until the 76th minute when senior forward Raimee Sherle received a cross well inside the box. After having her first shot blocked, she quickly secured the rebound and sent her second attempt just inside the right post for the match's lone goal.

Sherle now has 10 goals on the year, moving her into a tie for fifth most in the NCAA. Fellow senior Kristina Serres who fed the cross to Sherle received her second assist of the year.

Sophomore keeper Sydney Smith recorded her eighth shutout of the season and her 11th win. Win 11 required just one save, a leaping grab on a shot just over her head in the 48th minute. Smith is now tied for the second most shutouts in the NCAA this season.

"Big shout out to Sydney [Smith], eight shutouts is almost unheard," said Thomas.

The Broncos complete their two-game road trip, Sunday when they visit Fresno State for a 1 p.m. MT matchup with the Bulldogs.
