FRESNO, Calif. - Boise State women's soccer dropped its first conference game, on the road against Fresno State, Sunday afternoon. Junior Aubree Chatterton got the Broncos on the board early. However, two second-half goals by the Bulldogs made the difference in the match.
"After taking the lead into halftime, I thought we were going to come out better and we didn't, as a result, they gained the momentum and got the win," said head coach Jim Thomas.
In the 24th minute, Chatterton collected the ball on the left side and punched it through traffic into the back of the net. She now has six goals on the year, the second most on the team.
The Broncos controlled the ball for most of the first half, outshooting Fresno State 6-5. However, the Bulldogs adjusted at the half and scored two goals in a seven minute period.
The Boise State defense locked down after that but the Broncos were unable to get into an offensive rhythm, getting off just three shots in the second half.
"Fresno [State] were the better team, I think they beat us in a lot of areas and we couldn't find a stronghold in the game to build off of even while we were up," explained Thomas.
Despite the loss, Boise State remains tied at the head of the conference at 3-1-0 with seven games remaining in the regular season.
"That was one where you tip your cap to the other team that were better than you on the day," said Thomas. "We are going to go back to the lab and figure out how to regain the momentum of the season and get back to what we have been doing in the past."
The Blue and Orange return home for a pair of matches. The Broncos kick off the homestand with a 4 p.m. MT match against San Diego State. Sunday, New Mexico comes to town for a 1 p.m. MT kickoff at Boas Soccer Complex.
