Lupfer Sets Record In Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Boise State weathered a, well, blazing start from 3-point range Friday from the UAB Blazers, then exhaled at the final buzzer as Miyah Barnes' potential game-winning triple went off-target, securing the Broncos' 83-81 road win in Preseason WNIT consolation play.

The win wraps Boise State's participation in the tournament, in which the Broncos went 2-1. Boise State (3-1) returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 5 p.m., hosting Washington State at ExtraMile Arena.

The teams combined for 23 3-pointers, 11 for the Broncos and 12 for the Blazers, with Bronco guard Riley Lupfer hitting five triples to bring her career total to 262 and become Boise State's all-time leader. Lupfer passed the previous mark of 260, held by Abby Vaughan (1999-2003), with a 3-pointer with 3:22 left in the third quarter.

"It feels really good to get the win on the road," Lupfer deadpanned when asked about the record postgame.

The senior laughed, then added, "It feels really good. It feels good to do it here at Boise State with my teammates because it wouldn't have gotten done without them."

"I'm really proud of her. She's a culture kid, she buys in. Riley's had one of the all-time great careers, a Hall of Fame-type career, at Boise State, and I'm glad she got the record," Boise State head coach Gordy Presnell said about Lupfer.

Boise State had a slim 69-68 lead with 5:59 to play, after Rachael Childress hit another triple for the Blazers. But the Broncos would answer with a run that looked to have the game put away. Lupfer, who finished the night with 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting, hit her fifth 3-pointer of the night to put Boise State up, 72-68, and start a 10-1 run that closed with Mallory McGwire's triple to make it 79-70 with 2:33 to play.

UAB fought back, pulling to within two at 79-77 on a pair of Imani Johnson free throws with 56 seconds to go. Braydey Hodgins responded with a layup with 17 seconds on the clock, then twice went 1-for-2 from the line atter UAB buckets cut the lead to one. The final free throw had Boise State up, 83-81, with 4.3 seconds to go, and Barnes, who led all players with 23 points, took the inbound pass from under her own hoop, sprinted to the left wing but saw her final attempt hit side iron.

McGwire hit a career-high four 3-pointers, going 4-for-5 from behind the arc and 8-for-14 overall to lead Boise State with a career-high 20 points. Hodgins finished with 19 points, going 9-for-11 from the line along with grabbing six rebounds with five assists.

"I was really proud of them. It was long flights in the morning [yesterday] to get here, and to beat a team that's won at least 25 games the last two years shows our character," Presnell said. "Mallory hit some big shots, and hit four 3-pointers, and even had one called off on a travel, so she had a great game."

UAB (1-2) hit its first six 3-point attempts, all in the opening quarter, to go up by as many as 11 at 28-17 with 1:12 left in the frame. Trista Magee hit three of those triples, scoring all 14 of her points in the game over that start.

The Broncos committed seven fouls and put the Blazers on the line 12 times over the opening eight minutes, but steadily worked their way back beginning late in the first quarter. Braydey Hodgins' 3-point play with 59 seconds to go in the frame got the Broncos within eight, and started an 11-0 run that continued into the second quarter and knotted the game at 28.

Rachel Bowers contributed a pair of offensive rebounds and putbacks to the run, the second of which tied it up with 8:03 left in the half. The Blazers ended a scoreless spell of 4:07 with Katelynn Thomas' layup to go back up 30-28.

McGwire would score six points in the final minutes of the half to give the Broncos a 40-38 lead at the break.
