BOISE, Idaho - Boise State opened 3-for-17 from the field in the first quarter, and couldn't escape the hole Wednesday, dropping an 80-68 decision to Washington State at ExtraMile Arena.
The Broncos (3-2) will finish the week on the road, traveling to the Bluegrass State to face No. 8/9 Louisville Sunday at 11 a.m. MT.
A'Shanti Coleman's putback brought Boise State within four at 12-8 with 4:23 left in the opening frame, but the Broncos would go exactly six minutes without a field goal, going 0-for-9 with four turnovers until Mallory McGwire's basket with 8:23 to go in the second.
Washington State used that Bronco cold spell to stretch its lead to 25-10, opening the second quarter with a layup from Cherilyn Molina and a 3-pointer from Borislava Hristova before the Broncos called timeout.
Boise State (3-2) had no answer for Hristova, who led all players Wednesday with 25 points and nine rebounds, going 12-for-17 from the field. Jovana Subasic went 8-for-14 for 17 points off the bench.
Braydey Hodgins, Boise State's leading scorer in the game with 20 points, hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the second half to bring the Broncos to within nine at 35-26. But another cold streak, this time an 0-for-4 run over the next 2:52, allowed Washington State to go on an 11-4 run and take control with a 46-30 lead.
Boise State went on an 8-0 run late, powered by two drives by Hodgins, to get within 77-68 with 1:22 to play, but Hristova answered with a three-point play to get the Cougars back up 11 and quell the Broncos' comeback hopes.
Boise State's cold night extended to the free-throw line, where the Broncos went just 11-for-18. The Broncos finished the night 38.1 percent (24-for-63) shooting, while Washington State hit at a 54.8-percent clip, going 34-for-62.
