BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State post tandem of A'Shanti Coleman and Mallory McGwire came out firing against a BYU squad that boasted its own size advantage, combining for 34 points on 13-for-19 shooting in the Broncos' 66-55 victory Wednesday.
Coleman scored 11 of her 19 points in the first half, hitting her first five shots and ending up 8-for-10 from the field, while McGwire posted her second-straight double-double, going for 15 points and 14 rebounds.
The pair, along with sophomore Rachel Bowers, clamped down on BYU bigs Sara Hamson and Shalae Salmon on the defensive end, holding the pair to just 7-for-20 shooting from the field. The 6-foot-7 Hamson was held to just eight points and seven rebounds, while Salmon, despite pulling down 11 rebounds, struggled inside against McGwire, hitting just three field goals in 13 attempts.
"I believe it's a win that will follow us the rest of the season. They were in the [second round] of the NCAA Tournament last March, they have a very, very good team. It's a great win for us," Boise State head coach Gordy Presnell said after the game.
Coleman scored five-straight points over an 11-0 Boise State run in the opening frame, erasing an early five-point hole and giving the Broncos a 13-7 lead that forced a BYU timeout. Coleman gave the Broncos their first lead, 9-7, with a 3-pointer from the top of the key, then blew past her defender for an easy layup the next trip down to make it a four-point game. After another Bronco stop on the defensive end, McGwire hit a jumper from the baseline to push the lead to six and force a BYU timeout.
"I love the challenge. We're both long, so other than that, [Hamson] didn't have me in width. She's a really good player, but I did what I can do. Sometimes I underestimate my own size, but it was a good competition," Coleman said.
Boise State stepped up the defense in the second to counter a cold run, as the Broncos went just 3-for-18 in the frame. The defense, however, limited BYU to just three field goals of its own, bending but not breaking as a scoop layup from Braydey Hodgins and a free throw from Riley Lupfer got the Broncos some breathing room at 27-23 after the Cougars had pulled to within one.
Brenna Drollinger hit a pair of triples to account for a quick 6-0 BYU run that cut it to 24-23, as she finished the night with 11 points.
Paisley Johnson, who led BYU with 18 points on the night, tried to shoot the Cougars back into it in the second half, hitting two quick threes to bring the Cougars to within a pair at 31-29 early in the third. But, after Salmon tied the game at 31 with 7:41 to go in the frame, Boise State heated up.
Lupfer hit one of her four 3-pointers to get the Broncos back in front for good, and bookended a 12-2 sequence that included four points from Coleman and a bucket from McGwire.
The Broncos never looked back from there, with Lupfer's triple with 4:44 left putting the Broncos up, 58-48. The Bronco defense held BYU scoreless for a stretch of 7 minutes, 20 seconds, in the fourth quarter, and Jayde Christopher and Hodgins combined to go 6-for-6 from the line down the stretch to seal the win.
It was a fun game in the second half, the first time we've really collected together and played really good defense," Presnell said.
