BOISE, Idaho - Boise State resumes Mountain West play on New Year's Day, facing Wyoming for a 6:30 p.m. tip in Laramie. The Broncos close the week hosting Nevada Saturday, Jan. 4, for a 2 p.m. tip at ExtraMile Arena.
LAST TIME OUT
Boise State capped its regular-season, non-conference slate with a 76-74 win over Pepperdine on Dec. 22.
Center Mallory McGwire posted her third 20-point game of the season in the win, going for exactly 20 while grabbing seven rebounds.
The Bronco second unit shined, as well, with Jade Loville leading the group with eight points in addition to two assists, Ellie Woerner matching her career high with four steals to go with five rebounds, and center Rachel Bowers grabbing a team-high eight boards.
WHO'S NEXT
Mountain West play picks back up, with Boise State's final 16 games of the regular season all against conference foes, beginning New Year's Day at Wyoming (6-5, 2-0 MW).
The Cowgirls are one of four teams, along with the Broncos, to go 2-0 during the "preview week" of Mountain West play from Dec. 2-8. Wyoming picked up road wins at Air Force and New Mexico on Dec. 4 and 7, respectively.
The Cowgirls are led by the play of Tereza Vitulova (13.3 ppg, 6.4 rpg) and Quinn Weidemann (9.4 ppg, 19 3-pointers).
SERIES HISTORY
Boise State leads the all-time series with Wyoming, 13-11, and has won three of the last four meetings.
The teams met thrice last season, with each team defending its home court, before the Broncos routed the Cowgirls, 68-51, in the Mountain West Championship Game March 13 in Las Vegas.
IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Boise State has found itself, as well as a handful of players, ranked fairly high in early national stat rankings through Dec. 29.
As a team, the Broncos rank fourth in assists (252). The Broncos' 45.7 field-goal percentage ranks 27th, and the team's 115 3-pointers are 10th in the country.
Individually, redshirt senior point guard Jayde Christopher leads the nation with 102 assists, and is second with 7.85 assists per game. Senior guard Riley Lupfer is second in the country with 46 3-pointers made, and sixth with 3.54 triples made per game.
STRONG NON-CONFERENCE FINISH
Boise State's 76-74 win over Pepperdine on Dec. 22 gave the Broncos an 8-4 non-conference mark this season. It marks the fourth time since 2014-15 in which the Broncos have won at least eight games during their regular-season, non-conference slate.
COMING BACK FRESH
The Broncos return to action Wednesday at Wyoming after a season-long nine-day break (Dec. 23-31).
Boise State was on a rapid playing pace over November and December, playing 14 games over a 48-day span, an average of a game every 3.42 days. The Broncos played seven games in both November and December.
This pace has included no break from competition greater than five days, as well as road trips for five-straight weekends beginning with a Nov. 15 contest at UAB.
PREPARING FOR MARCH...IN THE FALL
The saying goes that the games at team plays in November and December prepare it for March.
Boise State, participants in each of the last three NCAA Tournaments, and four of the past five (2015, 2017-19), tested itself against some of the nation's top teams in the non-conference season, as the seven Division I opponents through Dec. 29 own a combined non-conference record of 64-43.
Two of Boise State's non-conference opponents are also ranked in this week's Associated Press Top 25 (Louisville at No. 7, Missouri State at No. 21).
NEW YEAR'S DAY ACTION
Wednesday's game at Wyoming will mark just the third time in program history that Boise State has played on New Year's Day. The Broncos are 0-2 on the holiday.
The first New Year's Day game in program history came on Jan. 1, 1983, when the Broncos fell, 77-74 in overtime, at Santa Clara. Boise State dropped its only other Jan. 1 game on New Year's Day 2005, 71-69 in overtime at UTEP.
CHRISTOPHER IN HEADY COMPANY
Redshirt senior point guard Jayde Christopher has posted a solid first half of the season, and it has put her in some elite company, nationally.
Christopher's 110 assists and 7.86 assists per game not only each lead the Mountain West, but are each second in the country, behind only reigning Wade Trophy Player of the Year Sabrina Ionescu of Oregon.
Her 110 assists are just 72 back of her career-best of 182 from last season, and only 82 behind the Boise State single-season record of 192 set by Yaiza Rodriguez in 2016-17.
With eight assists Dec. 22 against Pepperdine, Christopher recorded her 10th game this season with at least seven helpers. She's also posted three double digit-assist games, highlighted by a program single game record-matching 14 at then-No. 8/9 Louisville.
CARDIAC COMEBACKS
Riley Lupfer's 3-pointer with 41.1 seconds to play against Pepperdine on Dec. 22 put Boise State ahead, 75-74, en route to the 76-74 victory. It marked the third game-winning shot for the Broncos in the final minute of a game in December.
Mallory McGwire's 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining in overtime against New Mexico on Dec. 4 sealed Boise State's 83-82 win over the Lobos, and, on Dec. 15, Braydey Hodgins' driving layup with 2.2 seconds remaining broke a tie and sent the Broncos to a 63-61 win at Eastern Washington.
SECOND UNIT DELIVERS
Playing with just 10 players in uniform so far this season has placed a greater onus on Boise State's second unit delivering, and they have answered the call.
Dec. 22 against Pepperdine, guards Maggie Freeman, Jade Loville, and Ellie Woerner, and center Rachel Bowers combined to score 17 points, grab 15 rebounds, and make five steals in the 76-74 win. Loville scored eight points, Bowers grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, and Woerner made a career high-matching five steals.
On the year, this quintet, along with freshman guard Laia Soler, has been very productive, combining to score 22.0 points per game (29.4 percent of Boise State's offense), led by 7.9 ppg from Bowers and 6.6 ppg from Loville. The group is also shooting a collective 46.2 percent from the field (121-for-262).
FIRST QUARTER IS KEY
One of Boise State's New Year's Resolutions shurely has to be getting off to better starts in games. Overall, the Broncos have outscored their opponents this season all quarters but the first, where Boise State foes hold a 279-276 edge.
In three of the Broncos' four losses this season (Washington State, at Louisville, at TCU), they fell behind by double digits after the opening frame.
