ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -Â Justinian Jessup matched his career high with six three-pointers, but Jessup's look at a seventh fell short at the buzzer as Boise State dropped its Mountain West opener 80-78, Wednesday at New Mexico.
In a game that featured 17 lead changes, the Lobos (8-2, 1-0 MW) used a layup from Carlton Bragg with 34 seconds remaining to take a 79-78 advantage and hold on through three Boise State (4-3, 0-1 MW) chances in the final 20 seconds, including potentially go-ahead three-pointers from Alex Hobbs and Jessup.
Jessup finished with a season-high 24 points, one shy of his career best. He was 6-for-10 from three-point range.
Marcus Dickinson scored a career-high-tying 16 points, including 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range. Dickinson's three-pointer with 4:33 to go squashed a 5-0 run by the Lobos, pulling the Broncos within one and parking a 7-0 Boise State spurt.
Derrick Alston Jr. scored the next four points of that run. Alston's swooping layup with 3:11 to go put Boise State ahead 75-72.
New Mexico scored its next five points from the free throw line, holding a 77-76 lead as the clock ticked under a minute. Hobbs made two free throws to put Boise State back in front, but Bragg scored on the next possession, the final two of New Mexico's 48 points in the paint.
Alston finished with 20 points, six assists and five rebounds. He has scored at least 20 points in six of Boise State's seven games this season.
New Mexico's JaQuan Lyle led all scorers with 31 points. Bragg added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Lobos.
Boise State returns home Saturday, to host Colorado State. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. MT, following the Mountain West Football Championship between Boise State and Hawai'i, kicking off at 2 p.m. at Albertsons Stadium. Fans with a ticket to the football game can purchase tickets for the men's basketball game that night for $5 each, while supplies last. Discounted tickets can be purchased on game day or ahead of time through the Boise State Athletic Ticket Office.
