Boise State's women's tennis team has announced the signing of New Zealand product Holly Stewart.
BOISE, Idaho – Boise State's women's tennis team has announced the signing of one of the top prep-players from New Zealand in Holly Stewart of Auckland.
"This opportunity I am receiving has been my dream for as long as I can remember," said Stewart. "I am so thankful that I am able to pursue my dream here at Boise State with an amazing group of people around me supporting me every step of the way. My team driven mindset excites me to see how I can help make this team stronger."
"Holly is a big-time player who brings a ton of great experience with her as she transitions into our program," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "She's been very successful on both the national and international stages and has represented New Zealand on numerous occasions at some of the biggest junior events in the world."
Stewart, who will join the team this January for the spring dual season, has held the number-two ranking in New Zealand's 18U doubles in 2019 and was ranked number one in U16 singles and doubles in 2017. Stewart was also the recipient of the Chris Lewis Honors Award which honors the highest ranked Auckland junior in the ITF rankings.
The 5-foot-6 standout will enter the college game having won back-to-back U18 New Zealand National Championships in doubles competition in 2017 and 2018, and the U16 singles championship in 2018. Stewart also holds a wealth of international experience after representing New Zealand in the World Junior Teams Finals.
"I believe I thrive in a team environment, and being a part of the Boise State women's tennis team is an environment I know I, as well as the team, will succeed in," said Stewart. "Having been the captain of Auckland's age group national team's event, I believe that I have the characteristics that will help build this team to achieve even greater success in the future."
Stewart's mindset towards college tennis and how she and her family spoke more about what she can bring to the program as opposed to what the program can bring to her really stood out to coach Roghaar throughout the recruiting process. "In an individual sport that now becomes a team sport in college, Holly's mentality is special" said Roghaar.
