BOISE, Idaho — The Boise State softball team will seek better weather and a chance at making a splash on the national scene this weekend at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament. The Broncos will play five games over three days, Feb, 15-17, in both Westwood, Calif., and Long Beach, Calif.
LAST TIME OUT:Â Boise State opened the Maggie Livreri era with a 2-2 record at the Texas Classic. The Broncos opened the tournament with a resounding 8-0 victory in five innings over Boston College, before falling to Northwestern State in the bottom of the seventh later that night. The Broncos also lost to No. 16 Texas, before closing the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Northwestern State.
SERIES HISTORY:Â Unlike the Texas Classic, where Boise State had first-ever meetings against all three opponents, there is plenty of history between the Broncos and the field of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament. Boise State holds 4-2 records against both UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount, and are 1-8 against Long Beach State, and 0-3 against UCLA.Â
This will be the first-ever meeting against Ole Miss.Â
A CHANCE TO MAKE A STATEMENT:Â The Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament offers Boise State a chance to earn some statement wins against nationally recognized opponents. Loyola Marymount (NR/RV), Long Beach State (NR/RV) and Ole Miss (RV/RV) are making appearances in this week's NFCA and USA Softball polls.
In addition, UCLA – one of the tournament hosts – is ranked first and second in the two major polls.Â
TRYING TO BREAK THROUGH: Boise State will play one ranked opponent this weekend in host-UCLA. The Bruins are currently the top-ranked team in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, while being ranked second in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches' Poll. The Broncos are 3-46-1 all-time in games against ranked opponents.Â
The highest-ranked opponent the Broncos have beaten was No. 25 Fresno State in the 2011 season, with that being their last win over a ranked foe (April 30, 2011). Boise State swept that series in Boise, Idaho (April 29-30), winning 4-3, 3-2, and 12-9. Â
CERVANTES NEARS RECORD:Â In an already record-setting career, senior shortstop Rebekah Cervantes nears the school record for runs in a career. Cervantes is currently tied with Tara Glover (2012-14) with 135 career runs, needing only one more to set a new school record.Â
Glover is currently fifth on the Mountain West record book with 179 career runs — she scored 34 runs in her freshman season with Utah before transferring to Boise State.
BUSINESS AS USUAL FOR BROADUS: Expectations were already plenty high for Kelsey Broadus — the reigning Mountain West Pitcher of the Year. Broadus met those expectations with a 2-0 record at the Texas Classic. The southpaw from Albany, Ore., struck out seven batters in 13.2 innings of action.
