BOISE, Idaho -Â It was "Braydey and the Bench" Wednesday night at Taco Bell Arena as junior guard Braydey Hodgins posted her third-consecutive 20-point game and the Boise State bench combined for 30 points as the Broncos held off a late Fresno State comeback for an 83-76 win over the Bulldogs.
Hodgins finished the night with 21 points on 7-of-18 shooting, including four 3-pointers. The Pasco, Wash., native also had a steal and two blocks on the defensive end, and helped ice the game by going 3-for-4 from the line in the final minute.
"She has competitive greatness. She can be good when you have to be good," said Boise State head coach Gordy Presnell. "That's been a hallmark of her career here and she's made big plays and big shots for a long time. I'm really proud of her."
Sophomore Tess Amundsen led the Broncos' bench effort, scoring 11 points and going 5-of-7 from the field while posting a team-best plus-18 for the night. Freshmen Rachel Bowers and Jade Loville scored seven and six points, respectively, with each going 3-for-4 shooting.
"I was really proud of our bench. I think they had 28 points or 30 points coming off the bench. They left the floor and we were up about 19, and we didn't take care of business with our starters in the last four or five minutes," Presnell said.
Boise State's bench was a combined plus-36 in the contest, thanks in part to a 14-5 run to open the fourth quarter. With Amundsen, Bowers, Loville and Ellie Woerner joining Braydey Hodgins to open the fourth quarter and the Broncos up eight at 57-49, the Broncos (20-3, 11-1 MW) opened a large cushion. Amundsen opened the frame with a triple just five seconds in, and followed with a jumper after a Fresno miss. Loville added four points over the next 2:12, and Hodgins drained a 3-pointer of her own to stretch the Bronco lead to 19 at 71-52 with 6:43 to play.
"I think it's just confidence, and it comes from anything," Hodgins said about her recent run. "When we get into early February, late March, it seems to be when I turn it on. I don't know why it's like that but it is so we're going to try to ride that as long as we can."
The rest of the Bronco starters returned to the contest with six minutes to play and Boise State ahead, 71-54, but struggled to find a rhythm. The Broncos scored just five points and made just one field goal in eight attempts over the next 4:51, while Candice White led a heated-up Bulldog team on a 17-5 run to cut it to five at 76-71 with 1:39 to go.
White was held to just two points over the opening 6:18 of the game before going to the bench for the rest of the first half after picking up her second foul. The Mountain West's leading scorer came back shooting in the second half, scoring 22 of her game-high 24 points and going 8-for-11 over the final 20 minutes, including 4-for-6 from deep. White hit consecutive triples to pull Fresno State (15-8, 8-4 MW) within single digits at 73-64 and force a Boise State timeout with four minutes to go.
Hodgins hit a big triple for the Broncos out of the timeout to get the lead back to 12, but White went back to work, scoring five-straight to get the Bulldogs within five at 76-71 with 1:39 to go. Kristina Cavey, who finished the night with 14 points off the bench for the Bulldogs, hit a 3-pointer of her own to get Fresno State within two at 78-76 with 42 seconds on the clock.
Boise State, which had been locked in from the line over the first three quarters and change, went to the line five times over a 46-second span in the final 1:10, but each time came away just 1-for-2. But after Cavey's triple, the Bronco defense came to the rescue, forcing turnovers on each of the Bulldogs' next two possessions. Hodgins, with the Broncos up five following Joyce Harrell going 1-for-2 from the line, blocked Breanne Knishka's 3-point attempt with 16 seconds left, came up with the loose ball, then hit both freebies to put the Broncos up seven and ice the game.
Boise State helped build its second-half cushion with a big second-quarter run as White was on the bench in foul trouble. After Cavey cut the Bronco lead to one at 22-21 with 7:14 left in the second, Boise State answered with a 15-2 run over the next 5:17. A'Shanti Coleman, who grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to go with eight points Wednesday, started the run with a layup and made the hustle play of the stretch, keeping a loose rebound alive following Woerner's free-throw miss and finding Amundsen for the easy layup. Amundsen would go on to score six points over the run, with Hermida and Hodgins adding 3-pointers, and a Hodgins coast-to-coast layup capping it to make the score 37-23 with 1:57 left in the half.
The Broncos would take a 39-30 lead into the break after Fresno State closed the quarter with a 7-2 run
