BOISE, Idaho — Riding a five-game winning streak, the Boise State softball team will head South for the third-straight week. The Broncos will compete against Yale, Michigan State, North Dakota and Grand Canyon at the GCU Purple Classic, Feb. 22-24, in Phoenix, Ariz.Â
SERIES HISTORY:Â This weekend's tournament will feature first-time meetings against Grand Canyon, Michigan State and Yale. Boise State holds a 2-0 record in the series against North Dakota, with the last meeting coming during the 2017 season.
HOT START:Â At 6-2, Boise State has a chance to have their best start to a season in program history. The best 10-game start to season came in 2017, when the Broncos opened the year at 8-2. With five games being played this weekend, Team XI also has the opportunity to match the program's best start through 13 games, which also belongs to the 2017 squad who opened the year at 11-2.
WE'RE GOING TO THE QUAD:Â Since dropping back-to-back games to Northwestern State and Texas at the Texas Classic (Feb. 8-9), Boise State has rattled off five-straight wins to improve to 6-2. The longest winning streak in program history is 12-straight wins during the 2011 season.
IT'S ABOUT HOW YOU FINISH:Â In Boise State's unbeaten showing at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, all four wins were come-from-behind victories. Boise State has the same record in games where they score first as game when their opponent scores first (3-1).
BUT WHO HAVE THEY PLAYED?: Heading into the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, the Broncos had the opportunity to make a statement on the national scale, as four of their five opponents were appearing in at least one of the two major polls. Despite the game against No. 2/1 UCLA being cancelled due to rain, Boise State was still able to notch wins over Loyola Marymount, Long Beach State and Ole Miss – three teams that were receiving votes in the latest polls.
The win over Ole Miss is also the first win over an SEC team in program history.
BRONCOS SWEEP MOUNTAIN WEST HONORS: Boise State swept the Mountain West weekly awards for games played Feb. 11-17. Jessica McKay was named the Player of the Week, while Gianna Mancha was named the Pitcher of the Week. This is the first time this season a Boise State player has received a weekly recognition from the conference, and the first time the Broncos has swept both honors since doing it in back-to-back weeks last season (April 16-22 and April 23-29).
This is the first time McKay or Mancha has received a weekly honor from the conference.
