THE GAME: Boise State will play its second-to-last home game of the season this Wednesday, Feb. 27 at Taco Bell Arena when it welcomes Colorado State for a 7 p.m. tip. The Broncos (11-16, 6-8) and Rams (11-16, 6-8) have identical records and are tied for seventh place in the conference standings.
WATCH: For the second-straight game it will be Ari Wolfe, Doug Gottlieb and Kristen Balboni working the game for Stadium's Facebook page.
LISTEN: The game will broadcast on both 670 KBOI AM and 93.1 KTIK FM with Bob Behler and Abe Jackson calling the action.
LAST TIME OUT: Boise State was up five points with 48 seconds left in regulation, but a combination of unfortunate events created the perfect storm, as Utah State was able to force overtime and eventually pick up the 78-71 win at Taco Bell Arena on Saturday.
The Broncos were sensational in staging a comeback late in the second half. Down by nine points at 59-50 with 5:50 remaining, Boise State ripped off a 13-0 run to take the 63-59 lead with 1:30 to play. Utah State converted a layup to break up the Bronco run, but Justinian Jessup answered with his fourth 3-pointer of the night to make it a 66-61 game with 48 seconds to play.
Boise State went 2-of-4 from the free throw line in the final 48 seconds while Utah State was able to score seven points, tying the game at 68-68 to push it to overtime.
Derrick Alston led the Broncos with 22 points, playing a career-high 39 minutes. Jessup was sensational with a season-high 21 points while Alex Hobbs tallied the first double-double of his career with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
ABOUT THE RAMS: Colorado State averages 75.5 points a game for the conference's fifth-best scoring offense. The Rams are led by double-double machine Nico Carvacho (15.9 ppg, 13.0 rpg), who is fifth in the NCAA with 18 double-doubles.
CSU is on a two-game winning streak after logging victories on the road against San Jose State, 91-70, and at home against Wyoming, 83-48.
THE SERIES: Boise State holds a 12-10 advantage in the all-time series against the Rams and has won the last five meetings between the two teams. The Broncos are 8-1 against CSU at home, as well.
Boise State gutted out a hard-fought victory against Colorado State in the first meeting this season between the two teams, capturing the 70-68 win in Fort Collins on Jan. 29. The Broncos were extremely efficient from the field, finishing the night 26-of-45 (57.8%) for their second-highest field goal percentage of the conference season.
Jessup was the team's leading scorer with 20 points while Hobbs (17), Alston (14) and Dickinson (12) also finished in double figures.
ALSTON CONTINUES TO EVOLVE: Alston's 22 points against Utah State on Saturday marked his fifth 20-point game of the season, giving him the most 20-point games for any Bronco in 2018-19.
Furthermore, the redshirt sophomore's two 30-point games (30 vs. San Diego State and 33 vs. San Jose State) this season makes him just the second underclassman in program history to log two 30-point games in the same season, joining Derrick Marks who accomplished the feat in 2012-13 as a true sophomore.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR HOBBS: Hobbs' 13 points and 10 rebounds against the Aggies gave him the first double-double of his career while the 10 boards was also a career high for the 6-foot-4 junior guard.
The performance was the latest standout rebounding effort for a Boise State guard. Bronco guards have either outright led or tied for the team lead in rebounds in 20 of 27 games this season.
MAKING THE LONG BALL: The Blue and Orange were excellent from behind the arc against Utah State, going 12-of-25 (48%). While it was the Broncos' first loss this season when making 12 or more threes (now 3-1 on the season in such games), the team should be encouraged by its improving shooting percentage from three.
Boise State has shot 40 percent or better in five of its last seven games and is now fifth in the MW in conference play at 35.4 percent.
