BOISE, Idaho — Riding a nine-game win streak, the Boise State softball team will head south for the San Diego Classic, March 1-3. The Broncos will play four games at the tournament, which is co-hosted by San Diego State and University of San Diego.Â
SERIES HISTORY:Â This weekend's tournament will feature first-time meetings against both UIC (March 2) and Florida Gulf Coast (March 3). Boise State owns a 2-8 record against Long Beach, but took a 4-3 win over the 49ers earlier this season. The Broncos are looking to extend an unbeaten streak against UC Davis to 3-0 with a win on Friday.
HOT START TO THE SEASON:Â At 10-2, Boise State is off to one of the best start's in program history. Their record ties the 2017 squad for the best 12-game start in program history. With four games upcoming this weekend, Team XI has the chance to have the best 16-game start to a season in program history. That distinction is owned by the 2017 squad which went 12-4 through 16 games.Â
NATIONALLY-RECOGNIZED WIN STREAK:Â Since dropping back-to-back games to Northwestern State and Texas at the Texas Classic (Feb. 8-9), Boise State has rattled off nine-straight wins to improve to 10-2 on the season. That streak is tied for the seventh-longest active winning streak in NCAA Division I, behind only Florida State (23), Florida (18), Alabama (15), Indiana and UCLA (14) and Georgia (10).
The longest winning streak in program history is 12-straight wins in 2011 (Feb. 25 - March 13).
THEY'RE GOING TO THE QUAD!:Â Boise State's nine-game win streak coincides with the nine-game on-base streak for both Jessica McKay and Alison Seng. Both players have caught the eye of Peter Brand with an on-base percentage of .475 and .447, respectively.Â
PUTTING THE PLATE ON LOCKDOWN:Â The Broncos recently went 4-0 at the GCU Purple Classic, their second-consecutive tournament record of 4-0, thanks in large part to the combined efforts of Boise State's pitchers. The quartet of Kelsey Broadus, Gianna Mancha, Micaela Leal and Veronica Lynch combined for a 1.12 ERA at the Grand Canyon-hosted tournament, giving up only four earned runs and three walks in 25.0 innings of action.
CERVANTES AMONG THE NATION'S BEST:Â Senior shortstop Rebekah Cervantes is tied for sixth on the NCAA's active career leaders in doubles. The Visalia, Calif., native has doubled 43 times in her career, with each double extending her Boise State career record.Â
REUNION IN CALIFORNIA:Â Friday's tournament opener will mark a reunion for Boise State and former head coach, Erin Thorpe. Thorpe, the first head coach in program history (2009-14), is currently the head coach at UC Davis. She coached the Broncos to the first 173 wins in program history, and she currently has the Aggies off to their best start at a Division I school at 11-3. This will be the first meeting between Thorpe and the Broncos since her departure.Â
