BRONCOS AT MW CHAMPIONSHIP: Boise State is 3-7 all-time at the Mountain West Championship, advancing as far as the semifinals (2014 and 2015). The Broncos were the No. 2 seed last season, falling in the quarterfinals to Utah State.
ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST HONORS: The conference announced its All-Mountain West Teams, Tuesday, and junior guard Justinian Jessup was recognized as a third-team honoree while redshirt sophomore guard Derrick Alston was selected as an honorable mention.
The two league honors are the first such recognitions for both Jessup and Alston. Both Broncos were also recognized for the same such honors by the media in their independent poll. The media also acknowledged Alex Hobbs in their poll as an honorable mention.
FIRST ROUND PERSPECTIVE: The Broncos haven't played in the first round of the MW Championship since the 2014 season when they were a No. 6 seed. The Broncos won that matchup against No. 11 San Jose State, 83-52, in what was the team's only MW first-round game since the tournament adopted first-round games in the 2012-13 season.
The eight seed is the lowest seed for the Blue and Orange since the 2011-12 season when the team was also an eight seed, facing No. 1 seed San Diego State. The Broncos almost pulled off the upset in their first year in the conference, falling just short of San Diego State, 65-62, in the quarterfinals.
ENDING THE REGULAR SEASON STRONG: Boise State sent its two seniors – Zach Haney and David Wacker – out with a resounding win last Saturday against Air Force, as the Broncos dispatched the Falcons, 80-52, in a game that saw Haney score a career-high 20 points. The regular season finale snapped a six-game Bronco losing streak and helped push Boise State to the No. 8 seed.
Derrick Alston was the team's high scorer with 22 points, giving him his team-best eighth 20-point game of the season. The Broncos took a 45-24 halftime lead by shooting 57 percent from the floor and making 7-of-16 3-pointers (39 percent).
Boise State cruised for much of the second half, as it pushed the lead to 30 on a 3-pointer by Alston and another Alston 3-pointer built a 33-point lead at 63-30 with 11:30 remaining - the team's largest lead of the game.
HISTORY WITH THE RAMS: Boise State was able to secure the 70-68 victory on the road in Fort Collins against the Rams, but Colorado State was able to extract revenge and even the regular season series at 1-1 with a 76-62 win in Boise.
Justinian Jessup and Alex Hobbs have both proven to be excellent against the Rams, as the two averaged 22.5 and 14.5 points per game, respectively, in the two meetings this season.
Boise State leads the all-time series 12-11 and has faced CSU just once at a conference tournament in previous history. The sixth-seeded Rams earned the 88-81 victory back in the quarterfinals of the 2016 MW Championship over the No. 3 seed Broncos.
EARLY BIRD GETS THE DUB: The Broncos have been exceptional playing in games at or before 2 p.m. local time this season, as the team is 5-2 in such games. Some of the team's best games this season such as 105-57 victory over San Jose State (Feb. 9) and a 77-52 triumph over Wyoming (Jan. 26) all occurred during the day with the contests beginning at or before 2 p.m. The Broncos will look to have the same fortune with an 11 a.m. PT tip against the Rams in the opening round.
