Boise State Stymies Rams in 66-57 First-Round Win at MW Championship

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Zach Haney had 16 points and seven rebounds and Derrick Alston posted 17 points as Boise State defeated Colorado State 66-57 in the first round of the Mountain West Conference tournament on Wednesday.
Alex Hobbs also had 12 points for Boise State (13-19). Marcus Dickinson added 10 points.
Boise State went with its big starting lineup for the second-straight game, going with both Haney and David Wacker, along with Alston, Justinian Jessup and Dickinson. The two Bronco bigs were able to help the Broncos to a 26-21 advantage on the glass (+5) while also limiting the Rams to just eight second-chance points.
Today's result gives Boise State its first Mountain West Championship win since the 2014-15 season when it secured a 80-68 victory over Air Force in the quarterfinals on March 12, 2015.
The early tip time once again benefited the Broncos, as the team moved to 6-2 this season when playing games at or before 2 p.m. local time this season.
J.D. Paige had 25 points for the Rams (12-20). Nico Carvacho added 12 points.
The Broncos will now face the tournament's top seed in No. 14/17-ranked Nevada tomorrow (Thursday, March 14) at noon PT in the quarterfinals. The Blue and Orange will once again be the first game of the day.
