Team moves six spots up leaderboard with second-lowest round in program history
ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Boise State women's golf team put together one of the most impressive rounds in program history, shooting 282 (-6) in the third round of the BYU at Entrada Classic. The performance on Tuesday vaulted the Broncos six spots up the team leaderboard into a tie for third with Idaho.
Boise State ended the tournament with a three-round score of 889 (304-303-282, +25), and finished second in the field for birdies. The team's third round score is the second-lowest round in program history, while the 54-hole score ranks third on the school record book.
"I am so proud of this team. They came out ready to play," head coach Nicole Bird said. "We got some overnight rain and had to battle some injuries, so I wasn't sure how today was going to go. We made it our mission to make a lot of birdies today, and everyone came through. They were still some big numbers, but the women showed a lot of grit today and didn't let bad shots take away from the overwhelming number of good ones they made today."
Alejandra Lobelo led the Broncos with a top 10 finish in as she finished tied for third. After back-to-back rounds of rounds of 73 on Monday, the sophomore shot 2-under 7- to move four spots up the leaderboard.
Lobelo led the tournament in par-4 scoring, averaging 3.97 strokes.
Making 13 birdies on the day, Valentine Lacaze tied for the lead in the field, and finished in a tie for 28th – a stroke back of a top 25 finish. Lacaze concluded the tournament with a score of 225 (78-75-72, +9). After struggling on the first day of the tournament, senior Tara Finigan recovered on Monday by finishing in a tie for 32nd. Finigan shot 6-under 66, the third-lowest single round in school history, to move 31 spots up the leaderboard. She concluded the tournament with a score of 226 (82-78-66, +10).
Nicole Suppelsa finished in a tie for Finigan with a three-round score of 226 (75-77-74, +10).
Lexi Perry (78-79-80 – 237, +21) rounded out the lineup for Boise State.
"This team is something special, and I think they are starting to see it," Bird said. "I'm so proud of the fight and determination they showed today."
Boise State will return to action next week at the Meadow Club Women's Collegiate, March 18-19, in Fairfax, Calif.
