Boise State sits in seventh-place out of 42 teams.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Robin Pinger's appearance in two finals Thursday led Boise State's nine-woman contingent on the opening day of the CSCAA National Invitational Championship at Cleveland, Ohio. The junior opened the day by setting the meet record for the 50-yard breaststroke (28.45) during the morning's preliminary races. She was one of five Broncos to advance out of the prelims into the finals Thursday night where four recorded top-12 finishes.
Pinger's 28.45 during the prelims of the 50 breaststroke set the meet record in the morning. However, that was short lived as it was broken again Thursday night by a Washington State swimmer (28.10) during the finals. Pinger beat the time she swam during the prelims in the final turning in a 28.36 to finish fourth overall. The junior also competed in the 50 free Thursday clocking a 23.49 in the prelims, then followed with a 23.62 to place 20th overall in the finals.
Hayley Hill was the second of the five Broncos to reach finals Thursday night making it in the 500-yard freestyle. The sophomore clocked a 4:48.06 in the prelims — good for third — then followed that with a 4:50.30 in the final to place sixth.
The other three to make it to the finals came in the 50-yard backstroke. Freshman Madesyn Ronquillio placed seventh during the prelims with a 25.45. She then matched that time in the final to place ninth overall.
Katie McCoy finished the day in 12th place after turning in a 25.57 in the 50 back final. That was an eight-position improvement after she just qualified for the finals placing 20th — only the top 20 advance to finals in this meet rather than 24 — during the morning prelims with a time of 26.03.
The third Bronco to reach the 50 back final was Molly Hogg who took 16th in the final with a 25.94. Hogg was 12th in the prelims after clocking a 25.76.
Boise State also competed in two relay races on Thursday placing eighth out of 32 in the 400-yard medley when McCoy, Pinger, Emmie Jennings and Lauren Vitort swam a 3:42.97.
The Bronco 200-yard freestyle relay team of Pinger, Jennings, Emma Segneri and Hogg turned in a 1:33.38 to take 10th out of 32 teams.
Boise State will head into day two of the CSCAA National Invitational Championship in seventh place out of 42 teams with 121 points.
