Boise State Cruises to Utah Beach Classic Championship

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Boise State beach volleyball stormed past Colorado Mesa and Utah Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City losing only one of the 10 pairs played on the day as they claimed the championship of the Utah Beach Classic. Boise State opened the tournament with an impressive 5-0 sweep over the CMU Mavericks, then raced out to a 4-0 lead over Utah before claiming a dominant 4-1 victory over the Pacific-12 Conference school. Â Â
The pair of wins handed the Blue and Orange the championship and improved the Broncos' win streak to seven straight while moving to a school record 12-5 mark on the year.Â
On the day the pair of Janell Walley and Kendra Bodine extended their school record for wins in a season out to 12 with a victory versus CMU. Unfortunately, they saw their six-match win streak end when they fell against Utah to make them 12-5 overall. In addition, senior Sabryn Roberts and partner Morgan Hughes collected a pair of wins to push Roberts' program record for career wins out to 26, two ahead of Walley with 24.
The Broncos will be back in action this coming week when they close the season at home with an exhibition pairs tournament on Tuesday featuring College of Idaho, Northwest Nazarene, Southern Idaho and Treasure Valley Community College. Boise State will officially wrap up the season on Friday when they host 13th-ranked Arizona and Sacramento State.

The match started with the No. 5 pair of Kenna Hanses and Maya Watkins dispatching Magdalena Dabrowski and Kerstin Layman in straight sets 21-16, 22-20. That was followed by a win on court three by Jensen Allen and Ellie McDonald who beat Lindy Dixon and Hailey Crane convincingly in straight sets 21-11, 21-12 to put the Broncos within one of clinching the team victory.
The decisive match clinching victory came on court four where Kylee Johnson and Kiley Lewis teamed up to down CMU's Holly Schmidt and Ara Norwood in three sets as the Bronco duo held off the Mavericks' rally for a 21-17, 14-21, 15-12 win.
The next match off the sand was at No. 1 pair where Janell Walley and Kendra Bodine continue to shine as they cruised past Portia Valadez and Katie Scherr in two sets 21-16, 21-11. The Boise State tandem extended their win streak to six straight with the victory.
The final score was settled when Sabryn Roberts and Morgan Hughes turned in a impressive victory on court two where they put away the Mavericks' duo of Macie Lachemann and Samantha Ritter in straight sets 21-15, 21-16 to make the final team score 5-0 Boise State.Â
The Blue and Orange improved to 2-0 all-time over the Mavericks with both meetings coming this season. The first was at the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Ariz., during the season opening tournament Feb. 22-23 where the Broncos won 5-0.Â

Johnson and Lewis followed with another three-set win for the Blue and Orange against Utah as they held off Phoebe Grace and Olivia Teerlink in a tightly contested match on court four 21-18, 20-22, 15-12. Johnson and Lewis are now 8-2 with their victories on Saturday.Â
The clinching win came from No. 3 pair where Allen and McDonald who won in two highly competitive sets over Utah's Lauren Sproule and Jessica Villela 25-23, 24-22. Their win moved them to 6-4 on the year as a pair.Â
Boise State's final point of the day came from the No. 2 pair of Roberts and Hughes. They rallied from a set down to take the match from Kenzie Koerber and Megan Yett with two solid wins in the final two sets to make the final score 15-21, 21-14, 15-6 and put the Broncos up 4-0 over the Utes. The win was the fifth straight for the tandem and increased Roberts' school record for career wins to 26.
The last match was on court one where Walley and Bodine's rally attempt came up short as they fell in two tight sets 21-18, 26-24 to Dani Drews and Tawnee Luafalemana. The loss snapped their six-match win streak and moved them to 12-5 on the year.Â
