Broncos Finish Second in Utah, Townsend Takes Third

PROVO, Utah - A hard-fought Saturday led to a six-under final round for Boise State men's golf. The Broncos remained in contention throughout the day and finished in second place, just five strokes behind tournament host and eventual winner BYU. Three Broncos closed the day under-par which turned out a 19-under team score.

"We were right where we wanted to be with a few holes to go. We made a couple of mistakes and BYU made birdies. It's great to be in that spot and hopefully, we get there again and execute all the shots next time around. It was a great team effort with everyone contributing," said head coach Dan Potter.

The second place finish marks the fifth top-three finish this season for the Broncos. Boise State also topped four Mountain West teams as well as four of the five teams in the field ranked in the top-100 along with the Broncos (75).

Freshman Hugo Townsend fired off three rounds under par including a two-under 70 on the final day to close tied for third nine shots back of the victor from BYU Peter Kuest. Townsend finished off the tournament with four birdies on the final day bringing his total for the tournament to 15. That exceeded his old record of 14 birdies which he set at the Ka'anapali Intercollegiate to close the fall season.

"Our freshman were huge for us. Hugo finished third and really just looked like himself all three rounds. He's a great player," noted Potter.

Junior Mason Schulze snagged his highest finish this season after carding a three-under final round which jumped him into a tie for 14th.

"I was really proud of Mason. He's practiced well all spring and was due for some low scores. He was tough when we needed him," said Potter.

This finish marks the third top-25 finish of Schulze career.

Sophomore Skyler Eubank closed out play with an even-par 72 in the final round to finish tied for 18th at two-under for the tournament.

"Skyler has become just a great player and great competitor," stated Potter.

It has been a season of firsts for the lone sophomore on the roster, he grabbed his first career victory at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, that same week he won Mountain West Golfer of the Week honors for the first time.

After lighting up the leaderboard on day one, freshman Cameron Barzekoff struggled on Saturday shooting a six-over final round to finish the tournament at one-over in a tie for 30th. Despite this, Barzekoff has been a solid piece of the Boise State lineup during the spring schedule, logging two top-25 finishes in five starts.

"Cameron will learn from his final round but he's been such a spark for us this spring," Potter said.

A rough first day for junior Brian Humphreys gave way to strong back-nine finish on Saturday including four birdies on route to a one-under 71 to finish tied for 58th at seven-over.

"Brian has been off a bit but he stepped up for us today and he's going to play great far more often than not. He's a great leader," added Potter.

Humphreys continues to climb the record books for Boise State thanks to a win at the Bill Cullum Invitational earlier this season to go along with six top-25 finishes including four top-10s.

Competing in his final regular season tournament as an individual, Connor Bell closed play with a four-over 76 to finish at 12-over tied for 72nd.

"It was great having Connor (Bell) on the road with us this week. He's been a joy to have on the team for four years. He keeps everyone in a good mood on and off the course and did a great job as our lone senior this year. Friends and family traveled to Provo to watch Connor finish up his career as a Bronco and I'm so happy we all got to celebrate Connor this week," expressed Potter.

We have a deep group and we showed it this week. I'm proud of our guys and our best golf is still to come," said Potter.

The Broncos will return to action April 26-28 for the Mountain West Championships in Tucson, Ariz., at Tucson National Golf Club.
