TUCSON, Ariz. - In a final round that saw low rounds across the board, Boise State men's golf got as low as 11-under before settling at seven-under. The Broncos came out firing, logging 15 birdies and an eagle on the front nine. However, a number of back-nine mistakes caused Boise State to fall back to sixth place where it began the day.
"Team-wise, it was a roller coaster. We made birdies galore but then made some big mistakes. I was proud of how everyone came out firing," stated head coach Dan Potter. "We had higher expectations for the week but we just weren't as clean as we needed to be."
Freshman Cameron Barzekoff closed out his first conference championship in record-setting fashion thanks to a final round 66. That score ties the lowest-single round score in school history with Troy Merritt who shot a 66 May 1, 2007, in the Western Athletic Conference Championship. Â Barzekoff also matched the school's 54-hole conference championship record at 12-under par set by then-freshman Brian Humphreys two years ago at this same course.
"Very gutsy round for Cameron today he made putt after putt and he was just awesome. He knew he could play this course well and it was impressive to watch him get after it the way he did," said Potter.
Barzekoff started day three tied for fifth and came out hunting for birdies. He found them, logging four birdies on the front nine while surrendering only a single bogey all day on the par-five eighth. He quickly remedied the mistake with a clutch eagle putt on the 10th hole to move into sole possession of first place. He played the next seven holes at even par before closing with a birdie on the 18th hole to finish off his record-matching final round. He eventually held the clubhouse lead until late in the final round before ending up in third place behind New Mexico's Sean Carlon and Galven Green.
Fellow freshman Hugo Townsend put together three solid rounds in his first appearance at the conference championship. After opening with rounds of 69 and 72, he finished the final round with a one-under 71. He logged his first career top-25 finish in the postseason with a tie for 20th.
Sophomore Skyler Eubank closed out his first-career postseason appearance with an even-par finish leaving him tied for 29th. He carded six birdies in his final round, including five on the front nine. However, three bogeys and a triple bogey brought him back to even par on the day.
In his third-career conference championship, junior Mason Schulze finished tied for 29th at even-par alongside Eubank. This was Schulze best finish at a conference championship, eclipsing his previous best when he tied for 33rd in 2018. During the final round, he logged his first eagle of the season on the par-five eighth. With his birdie on the 13th, he set his career high in birdies for a 54-hole tournament at 13.
In his third-career conference championship, junior Humphreys shot the first and final rounds at even par. Only a costly day two kept him out of contention. As a result, he finished the championship at six-over tied for 46th.
The Broncos close the season with five top-3 finishes including a team victory and two individual victories from Humphreys and Eubank. In addition to podium finishes by freshmen Townsend and Barzekoff.
"We'll learn from this. We have the same team coming back next fall and we'll be hungry," proclaimed Potter. "I couldn't be happier with the effort of our guys throughout the season. We had several guys improve substantially. I've loved coaching this group."
The announcement of the all-conference team and individual honors will be announced April, 30.
