FRESNO, Calif. – Boise State was held to only three hits in a 5-0 loss to Fresno State to open the series, Thursday night at the Margie Wright Diamond. The Broncos held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard in five separate frames, but a five-run bottom of the third was enough to give Fresno State the win in the opener.
Boise State (34-12, 12-10 MW) got hits from Rebekah Cervantes, Bradie Fillmore and Morgan Lamb on the day.
In the top of the third, the Broncos put a runner in scoring position thanks to Alison Seng reaching on a hit by pitch, followed by a walk from Ashlyn Adams. With two outs in the inning however, Cervantes was unable to capitalize on the two base runners, grounding out to the second baseman. Boise State would finally end the inning thanks to a double play. Vanessa Hernandez hit a groundball to Cervantes, which was turned to Seng at first base, and back to Fillmore at third to get Madison Wallace for the final out.
The Bulldogs would take control in the bottom half of the inning, scoring all five of their runs on six hits and an error. Â Veronica Lynch would enter the game in relief, and pitched effectively for the Broncos. The junior held Fresno State to one hit and no walks in 3.2 innings of action, while notching two strikeouts.
Down 5-0 in the top of the seventh, Boise State was unable to get a runner on base.
Boise State will look to even the series in tomorrow's second game. First pitch from Fresno will be 7 p.m. MT.
