BOISE, Idaho — The Boise State softball team will close out the regular season with a road trip to Fresno State, May 9-11. Already eliminated from Mountain West contention, the Broncos are looking to improve their resume for a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
SERIES HISTORY
Boise State trails the all-time series against Fresno State, 9-22. Dating back to days in the WAC, the two programs have been conference rivals every season but the 2012 campaign – Boise State's first as a member of the Mountain West. The Broncos have managed to capture the series victory over Fresno State three times in program history, including a 2-1 advantage last season in Boise.
SCOUTING REPORT
Fresno State's strength lies in its pitching. The duo of Hailey Dolcini and Danielle Lung make the Bulldogs one of two programs to have multiple pitchers log at least 14 wins on the season. Last season while competing with UC Riverside, Dolcini held the Broncos to zero runs in a 1-0 shutout.
Five members of the order are batting over .300 on the season, led by McKenzie Wilson with a .390 average. The freshman has also posted stellar numbers on the base paths, leading the conference with 34 stolen bases.
STILL SOMETHING TO PLAY FOR
Already eliminated from Mountain West title contention, the Broncos now attempt to improve their resume for a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Currently 33rd in RPI, the Broncos possess 13 wins over top 100 teams in the nation, including one over No. 17 Ole Miss. The Broncos still have a chance to improve their ranking this weekend against Fresno State.
FIRST RANKED WIN(S)
This past weekend against No. 25 Colorado State, the Broncos were able to get the first win over a ranked opponent since Boise State swept then No. 25 Fresno State to close out the 2011 season (April 29-30). By getting two victories over the Rams, Boise State improved their all-time record against ranked opponents to 5-47-1.
GOING YARD
Mountain West Conference play has brought out the best in Boise State's bats, as the Broncos have hit 40 of their 59 home runs this season in conference play. Still with six games left to play, the 39 home runs are the most dingers Boise State has hit against Mountain West opponents in a single season, eclipsing the previous record of 35 set by the 2016 squad.
With 59 home runs over the course of the entire season, the Broncos are only three shy of setting a program record for home runs in a season. That mark of 61 was set by the 2010 squad.
FOUR CHEERS FOR THE MOUNTAIN WEST
One of the largest deciding factors between the 2018 season and the 2019 season has been the overall strength of the Mountain West. In Monday's release of the RPI, the conference placed four teams in the top 64 of the metric used to help determine at-large bids to the national championship. The Broncos lead the conference, checking in at 33rd.
Colorado State (35th), UNLV (43rd) and San José State (47th) bolsters the conference's attempt to become a multi-bid league this season, as the Mountain West currently ranks as the seventh-best league in the nation.
MAKING PETER BRAND PROUD
In addition to the threat she brings on the base paths, Wade is already a nightmare for opposing pitchers. The senior leads the lineup with a .433 batting average and has reached base in 37-consecutive games – currently the longest streak on the team. Her on-base streak dates back to a 2-1 win over Yale on Feb. 23, while she has successfully reached base in 43-out-of-45 games this season. Wade would no doubt catch the eye of the fictious MLB executive Peter Brand from the film Moneyball.
Her streak is tied with Tara Glover for the longest in program history.
