Thrice as Nice! Ostrander Wins Steeplechase Title for Third-Consecutive Time

Redshirt junior sets school record of 9:37.73 in process of becoming the first woman at the Division I level to win three-consecutive titles in the event

AUSTIN, Texas – At this point, it shouldn't even be a surprise.

Taking control of the race in the final 900 meters, Boise State redshirt junior Allie Ostrander won her third-consecutive national title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running a school-record time of 9:37.73 in the process. Ostrander becomes the first woman at the Division I level to win three-consecutive titles in the event, and joins Jenny Barringer (Colorado; 2006, 2008-09) as the only woman to win three titles in the event.

She also became the first athlete in Boise State history to win three national titles over the course of their career – surpassing Gabe Wallin, who won national titles in the javelin in 2005-06. She is only the 15th athlete on the women's side at the Division I level to win three-consecutive national titles in the same event, and only the sixth to accomplish the feat in the middle-distance or distance events.

"This one definitely feels special," Ostrander said. "Coming out of regionals, it was the fastest West Regional ever, in prelims yesterday I felt like it was probably the fastest ever. There are so many competitive ladies this year, and I also had the added pressure of two past titles, so to be able to be able to pull this one off was something really special."

With the temperature on the track at Mike A. Myers stadium creeping close to triple digits, Ostrander placed herself in the top four at the start of the race as the lead pack ticked off splits of 80-90 seconds. Entering the top of the home stretch prior to the final two laps, she surged ahead of the pack and was able to drop the rest of the field. The Kenai, Alaska native cruised down the final homestretch to win her third national title.

Coming back less than 90 minutes later, Ostrander took 16th in the 5,000-meter to earn second-team All-America honors.

Krisite Schoffield put together a dominant showing in the 800-meter event to take sixth and earn first-team All-America honors. Only a sophomore, Schoffield recovered from being tripped up entering the final lap to finish sixth in 2:03.83. She is the only woman in Bronco history to reach the final in the event – indoors or outdoors.

"I always knew I could be there and I could be in the top — I didn't know it was going to be this year, so that's exciting," Schoffield said. "The coaches have been really supportive and my teammates are so supportive. I think it just takes people believing in you like the coaches have this whole season."

As a team, Boise State finished in a tie for 20th with 13 points. The Broncos grabbed four All-America honors during the outdoor season, as Alexis Fuller made the honorable mention team in the 1,500-meter on Thursday.

This concludes the 2018-19 athletic season for Boise State.
