The 2018-19 year was another impressive one academically for Boise State as all 19 sports excelled, recording a school all-sports record for cumulative grade point average (GPA) at 3.34. It also marked five-consecutive semesters for the department with a 3.3 or higher cumulative GPA, as well as 24-straight semesters (12 years) over a 3.0.
This past spring, the student-athletes combined for a 3.31 GPA, tying the highest single-semester GPA in department history. It is the 15th-consecutive semester the all-department GPA has been 3.0 or better.
In the spring, Boise State student-athletes tied a record with 81 percent achieving a semester or cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. There were 47 students-athletes who recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring. Last fall, 80 percent of Bronco student-athletes achieved at least a 3.0, either semester or cumulative, including 55 with perfect 4.0s.
During the 2018-19 academic year, 92 student-athletes graduated and 10 sports either tied or set a program record for a semester and/or cumulative GPA: women's basketball, beach volleyball, football, women's golf, softball, swimming and diving, volleyball, men's and women's tennis, and women's track & field.
Six programs received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for having multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the top-10 of their respective sports: beach volleyball, men's golf, women's golf, gymnastics, women's tennis and men's track & field. For the second-straight year, the six Public Recognition Awards are the most in the Mountain West, and are tied for the most in a single year in conference history (Air Force, 2004-05 and Boise State, 2016-17). Buoyed by the six awards, the department established a multi-year record score of 989.
Additionally, nine programs recorded perfect single-year APR scores in 2017-18: beach volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's golf, women's golf, gymnastics, soccer, men's tennis and women's tennis.
Individually, Allie Ostrander of the women's track & field program received CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, while four others joined Ostrander in receiving CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition: Matt Locher (football), John Molchon (football), Ally Kleinsorgen (swimming & diving) and Courtney McGregor (gymnastics).
At the conference level, Boise State student-athletes combined for a total of 215 academic all-conference (Mountain West Conference and Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference) and 113 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete (3.5 or better cumulative GPA) honors.
Last fall, Boise State had 93 Academic All-Mountain West honors, the highest fall total by a school in league history. It is the third-consecutive year in which Boise State has either led or tied for the league high in fall all-academic honorees.
Men's Basketball: Four men's basketball players were recognized by the Mountain West Conference by being named to the academic all-conference team.
Women's Basketball: Ten members of the team excelled in the classroom during the year earning Academic All-MW honors, while nine made the MW Scholar-Athlete list. The team turned in a program-record 3.42 spring semester cumulative GPA.
Beach Volleyball: The beach volleyball team set new records for both semester GPA of 3.68 (spring 2019) and cumulative GPA with a 3.63 during the year. In addition, seven Broncos have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better. The team also earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for combined team GPA during the 2018-19 year.
Football: The team was led by Matt Locher and John Molchon's CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, while a total of 37 members earned Academic All-Mountain West and 12 received MW Scholar-Athlete accolades. For the football team, this was the eighth time in as many seasons that the Broncos have led the conference in all-academic selections.
Men's Golf: Brian Humphreys was named a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar. In addition, the program placed three members on the 2019 Academic All-MW Team and one on the MW Scholar-Athlete list. The NCAA announced that the men's golf program posted a perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the 2017-18 year.
Women's Golf: The Broncos women's golf team tied the program record for semester GPA in the spring with an impressive 3.68. They also received the NCAA Public Recognition Award for the sixth-consecutive year for ranking in the top-10 among women's golf programs nationwide. In addition, Boise State placed six on the Academic All-MW Team and five on the conference's scholar-athlete list.
Gymnastics: The gymnasts were steady as usual in the classroom earning the NCAA Public Recognition Award for a second year in a row. They, as a team, have an a cumulative GPA of 3.79, the highest for any sport at Boise State, and have eight-straight semester GPAs above 3.7. Courtney McGregor was named CoSIDA Academic All-District while 14 Broncos received Mountain Rim All-Academic honors. In addition, nine of the 16 members earned 4.0 GPAs during the spring semester.
Soccer: Raimee Sherle was named a United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Scholar-Athlete All-America. The Broncos also placed 18 on the Academic All-MW Team, while 17 earned MW Scholar-Athlete accolades. The soccer program posted a perfect APR for 2017-18 as announced by the NCAA in May.
Softball: The softball team established a new team record for cumulative GPA at 3.35 during the fall semester, then broke that in the spring with a 3.36. Meanwhile, the Broncos placed 14 members on the Academic All-MW Team and nine on the MW Scholar-Athlete list. Boise State has either led or tied for the conference high in Academic All-MW honorees each of the past two years, and in five of the eight since joining the league.
Swimming & Diving: The swimming and diving team broke both the program's semester and cumulative GPA records during the spring term tallying identical marks for both categories at 3.68. The spring semester marked the 17th-consecutive semester that Boise State had been named a Scholar All-America Team by the CSCAA. Nine members earned 4.0s in the spring, 25 were named to the 2019 Academic All-MW Team and 21 made the MW Scholar-Athlete list. In addition, Ally Kleinsorgen earned CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition for the second year in a row.
Men's Tennis: The men's tennis team set a team record for cumulative GPA during the fall semester with a 3.44. Five members made the Academic All-MW Team and two were listed as MW Scholar-Athletes. The team was named an ITA All-Academic Team, Ryland McDermott and Max Blancaneaux were named ITA All-Academic Scholar-Athletes.
Women's Tennis: The Broncos set new records during the spring for semester GPA at 3.67 and cumulative GPA at 3.60. They also earned the NCAA Public Recognition Award for the fifth-consecutive year for APR score. Boise State placed six on the Academic All-MW Team and five were named MW Scholar-Athletes. In addition, the Blue and Orange was named an ITA All-Academic Team, while five members of the squad were named ITA All-Academic Scholar-Athletes.
Men's Track and Field/Cross Country: Boise State's men's track & field team earned the NCAA Public Recognition Award for their APR score of 997. The cross country team led the league with 12 Academic All-MW honors. Meanwhile, track & field placed 16 on the Academic All-MW Team, five earned MW Scholar-Athlete recognition.
Women's Track and Field/Cross Country: The women's track & field and cross country programs recorded a team GPA of 3.56 and a cumulative GPA of 3.60 during the fall semester, both team highs. Allie Ostrander was named CoSIDA Academic All-America and All-District for the second-straight year. In addition, she won the NCAA Elite 90 Award as the participating athlete with the highest GPA at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Overall, 19 members of the track & field program earned Academic All-MW accolades, all 19 made the MW Scholar-Athlete list. The cross country team placed a league-best 16 on the Academic All-MW Team.
Volleyball: The volleyball team set new highs during the fall term for semester (3.55) and cumulative (3.38) GPAs, then broke those marks during the spring at 3.61 and 3.42, respectively. The Broncos had 10 Academic All-MW performers, tied for the second-most in the conference, and six MW Scholar-Athletes. In July the team earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for combined team GPA during the 2018-19 year.
