APIA, Samoa - Boise State junior Lauren Sale became the first Boise State swimmer in program history to win a gold medal at the Pacific Games on Tuesday bringing home the 200-meter backstroke title. Sale — who is swimming for the Samoa National Team — clocked a 2:20.84 in the final of the 200 backstroke to claim the gold medal. It is also the first gold medal won by a Samoan female swimmer in the nation's history.

She recorded a personal-best 2:19.56 in the preliminary rounds of the 200 back, which led all swimmers. Sale's previous best for the 200-meter backstroke long course was 2:20.62, which she swam at the CA MVN Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Champions on June 22, 2019 at Mission Viejo, Calif.

Sale's top time at Boise State in the 200-yard backstroke — short course — is 1:58.07 set in the prelims of the 2019 Mountain West Championships last February at Minneapolis.

Sale's participation in the 2019 Pacific Games continues Wednesday with the 50-meter backstroke and 100-meter butterfly. The Pacific Games' swimming events are being held at the Samoa Aquatic Centre in Apia, Samoa.
