Broncos Close Homestand with Victory over North Dakota

9/20/2019 9:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State women's soccer recorded its seventh victory of the season defeating the Fighting Hawks of North Dakota 3-1, Friday, at Boas Soccer Complex.

It was a battle of pace early as the Broncos looked to push the ball while the Hawks looked to slow things down throughout the first half. North Dakota jumped out to an early lead off a goal in the seventh minute thanks to a shot that took a fortunate bounce off the right post before rolling into the net.

Senior Raimee Sherle responded quickly, however, pulling the Broncos even in the 19th minute. A shot by senior Emily Curry ricocheted off the bar, Sherle collected the rebound and nailed it home for her sixth goal of the season.

Just before halftime, junior Jennifer Turnek gave the Broncos the lead with a header fed to her on a cross by Jazel Bowers in the 45th minute. Turnek now has two goals in the last week while Bowers would go on to record two assists in the game.

"Ironically, it was the best half we've played from top to bottom, from start to finish in the first 45," said head coach Jim Thomas. "To be able to seal out a team that was 6-1-1 coming into the game, it's a real testament to these players to stay right on top of the jobs they were given, both before the game and at halftime."

The Broncos secured an insurance goal in the 57th minute off another feed by Bowers, this time with a pass ahead to redshirt junior Ashleigh Harrison who sent the ball to the back of the net. That marked Harrison's first goal of the season.

"We are starting to shed these roles of starter or coming off the bench and just say I'm a great player, I should be out there and I can contribute," explained Thomas.

With the 7-1 start the Blue and Orange continue to keep pace for the best start in program history staying one game ahead of the 2018 squad which started 6-2.

The Broncos hit the road to Cedar City, Utah, for a Sunday matchup against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds at 1 p.m. MT. Boise State is currently 5-0 this season against Big Sky opponents.
