Broncos Secure Win for Best Start in Program History

POCATELLO, Idaho - After a tough fought first half, the Boise State women's soccer team closed out a 1-0 victory over the Idaho State Bengals, Friday night. This win moved the Broncos to 4-0 on the season, marking the best start to a season in program history.
Head coach Jim Thomas talks about the teams record setting start. "There have been great coaches here in the past, they have coached great players against excellent schools. This is no different, this is a great team, one of the greatest. They have designs to be the best there ever was and we are making strides towards that every single day."Â Â
Defense was the name of the game early as Boise State and Idaho State played the first half to a 0-0 draw. The Broncos were able to amass 11 shots to the Bengals three, however, none found the back of the net.Â
Â
"The game had a lot of factors that really made it difficult," said Thomas. "Going from grass to turf, it is an instate rivalry and they were set up really well to defend us. But I thought our girls really problem solved well at halftime after we settled into a tempo that was a bit slow."
Keeper Sydney Smith stopped an early opportunity for Idaho State with a diving save in the 33rd minute. It was her fourth victory and third clean sheet of the season.Â
Â
It wasn't until the 64th minute that senior Raven Sweeney broke the tie with a blast from well outside the box to put the Broncos up 1-0. She has now scored in three-straight games. It was her second game-winning goal of the season.
"We had a lot of opportunities early and we weren't able to convert, so when I got a look I was really happy it went in," said Sweeney.
It's kind of other worldly to see these goals that Raven [Sweeney] is putting in right now, exclaimed Thomas.
Boise State continued to lock down the Bengal offense for the remainder of the game to secure the victory.
The Broncos look to continue the winning streak when they return to Boise for a matchup with the Utah Utes, Sunday at 1 p.m. MT, at Boas Soccer Complex. Be one of the first 200 fans and receive a free set of thundersticks to cheer on your Broncos.
