LOS ANGELES – The Boise State gymnastics team, ranked No. 18 in the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association Preseason Poll, held a first-rotation lead against fourth-ranked UCLA, but ultimately dropped its opening meet of the 2020 season, 196.800-195.475.

The meet aired nationally on the Pac-12 Network.

"I am so proud of this team," head coach Tina Bird said. "Bars and beam were stellar and we know we have some work to do on vault and floor. I'm very pleased with the outcome of this first meet."

Boise State opened on bars, their best event of the evening, securing a 49.325 to hold a slim lead over the Bruins, which started on vault (49.300). Junior Emily Muhlenhaupt led the way, scoring 9.925 in her first routine of the season. Senior Courtney McGregor added a 9.875, and redshirt junior Maddi Nilson and junior Gabriela Bouza added a pair of 9.800s. The score tied a career high for Nilson.

Junior Tatum Bruden rounded out the scoring with a 9.825.

Bouza (9.825) and Bruden (9.800) each scored 9.800-or-better on vault, but an injury suffered by McGregor in the event forced the Broncos to count a 9.600 and a 9.625, and the Broncos relinquished their lead following the second rotation.

McGregor, one the Broncos' team captains and the all-around champion at last year's Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Championship, would not return to the line-up for the final two events of the evening.

In each of the final two rotations – floor and beam – three of the six competitors for the Broncos were making their debut in the event. On floor, in the Broncos' third rotation, freshmen Erin Elkabchi and Adriana Popp made their collegiate debut, and sophomore Samantha Smith saw her first action in the event. Elkabchi and Popp also competed on beam, and Muhlenhaupt made her first-career appearance in the event.

"Adriana and Erin really did their job on beam, and I was so happy with Emily's performance," Bird said. "This beam team can compete with in anyone in the country."

The Broncos were able to match UCLA's score on beam (48.400) in the third rotation, keeping the team scores close headed into the evening's final events.

Bruden led the Broncos on floor with a 9.800.

The Broncos scored a 49.150 on beam, led by 9.875s from both Amado and Muhlenhaupt. Popp added a 9.850 and sophomore Hope Masiado added a 9.800. The Bruins scored a 49.725 on floor, ultimately clinching the victory.

Next up for Boise State is a meet at Washington, Jan. 20. The Broncos and Huskies are slated to begin at 7 p.m. MT, and the meet will be nationally televised on the Pac-12 Network.
