BOISE, Idaho -Â Boise State returns from its first bye of Mountain West play, hosting first-place Fresno State Saturday at 1 p.m. at ExtraMile Arena. The Broncos, two games back of the Bulldogs on the Mountain West table, have a chance to not only halve the distance with a win, but also claim the tiebreaker as Saturday's contest is the only regular-season meeting between the teams.
LAST TIME OUT
Boise State extended its winning streak to three, and went into its first bye of the Mountain West campaign, with a 65-59 victory at Utah State last Saturday.
Senior guard Braydey Hodgins scored a team-high 17 points, in the process becoming the 22nd member of Boise State's 1,000-Point Club, and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the way.
The Broncos trailed twice late, but a 3-pointer from A'Shanti Coleman with 1:05 to play, and an And-1, three-point play from Riley Lupfer in the final minute helped lead the comeback.
WHO'S NEXT
The Broncos will have a chance to climb closer back to the top of the Mountain West standings Saturday, hosting first-place Fresno State (15-4, 8-0 MW) at 1 p.m. at ExtraMile Arena.
The Bulldogs bring a seven-game winning streak to Boise, having not lost since a 90-66 defeat at Santa Clara back on Dec. 21.
Maddi Utti, the two-time reigning Mountain West Player of the Week entering Saturday's game, leads the Bulldogs with 16.9 points and 9.1 rebounds per game, while the Cavinder sisters, Haley and Hanna, each average 15.9 and 15.6 points per game, respectively, with Haley grabbing 7.5 rebounds per contest.
SERIES HISTORY
Fresno State leads the all-time series against Boise State, 24-17, although the Broncos have won the past seven meetings.
Last year, the Broncos went 3-0 against the Bulldogs, culminating the sweep with an 89-77 victory in the Mountain West Tournament semifinals.
IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Boise State has found itself, as well as a handful of players, ranked fairly high in early national stat rankings through Jan. 22.
As a team, the Broncos rank ninth in assists (341). The Broncos' 45.2 field-goal percentage ranks 25th, and the team's 147 3-pointers are 27th in the country.
Individually, redshirt senior point guard Jayde Christopher leads the nation with 154 assists, and is second with 7.70 assists per game. Senior guard Riley Lupfer is eighth in the country with 59 3-pointers made, and 25th with 2.95 triples made per game.
PROTECT THE HOME COURT
Jan. 15's 70-61 win over Air Force marked Boise State's 18th-straight home victory over Mountain West competition.
The Broncos' last home conference loss was a 72-68 defeat to Nevada on Jan. 20, 2018.
The current 18-game conference home winning streak is the longest in the Mountain West.
BEATING THE CALIFORNIA TEAMS
Jan. 11's win over San Diego State was Boise State's 17th in a row over the Mountain West's California schools, and the Broncos will get a chance to extend that run Saturday against Fresno State.
Since dropping an 84-77 decision at San Diego State on Jan. 7, 2017, the Broncos are now 5-0 against the Aztecs, 7-0 against Fresno State, and 5-0 against San Jose State over this 17-game run.
MAYBE IT'S A "BRONCOS" THING
Fresno State brings a six-game winning streak into Saturday's game at ExtraMile Arena, however, if you're the superstitious sort, perhaps playing the Broncos is a bad omen for that run?
Fresno State's last loss came to another team of Broncos, as the Bulldogs were routed, 90-66, at Santa Clara on Dec. 21.
HODGINS JOINS THE CLUB
Senior guard Braydey Hodgins scored 17 points last Saturday at Utah State, and in the process became the 22nd member of Boise State's 1,000-Point Club.
Reaching 1,000 points also made Hodgins, with 1,010 career points through Jan. 18, the fourth member of her immediate family to hit that mark. Her mother, Karen (Murray) Hodgins, scored 1,745 points at Washington (1981-84), and her older sisters, Delaney (2015-18) and Hayley (2013-16), are 1-2 on Eastern Washington's career scoring list with 2,120 and 1,865 points, respectively.
ANOTHER FINAL-MINUTE COMEBACK
Riley Lupfer's three-point play with 20 seconds left in Jan. 15's game at Utah State gave the Broncos a 61-59 lead, and, with the eventual 65-59 win, the team's fourth victory this season when trailing in the final minute of regulation.
Previously, the Broncos came back from final-minute deficits in regulation to win against New Mexico (Dec. 4, winning 83-82 in overtime), at Eastern Washington (Dec. 15, winning 63-61), and against Pepperdine (Dec. 22, winning 76-74).
DOGHOUSE GRILLED
While the Broncos are on a seven-game winning streak against Fresno State, much of that run has featured convincing wins.
Only the first win in the current run, a 67-66 Bronco win back on Jan. 14, 2017, came by less than seven points. Four of the last six have been double-digit margins for the Broncos, including two last season (72-60 at Fresno State last Jan. 19; 89-77 at the Mountain West Tournament semifinal).
