THE MEET
The Boise State gymnastics team will hit the road for the fifth time in six meets this season, traveling to Provo, Utah, to square off against 16th-ranked BYU in a dual meet, Saturday (Feb. 15). The Broncos and Cougars are slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Smith Fieldhouse.
The meet will be televised on BYUtv, and is available free online at BYUtv.org.
SERIES HISTORY
BYU leads the all-time series against Boise State (38-32), and earned a victory over the Broncos earlier this season in Boise (196.100-194.450; Jan. 31). The Broncos were victorious in each of the two meetings in Provo this past year, earning a regular-season win (197.175-196.900) and capturing the 2019 Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Championship.
IN THE RANKINGS
Led by Emily Muhlenhaupt, the Boise State gymnastics team's bars line-up ranks in the top 25 in Road to Nationals for the fifth-consecutive week. The Broncos checked in at No. 22 nationally on bars with an average team score of 48.900, while Muhlenhaupt, a junior, ranked 11th nationally (9.895).
The Broncos' overall team ranking entering this week's Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference meet at BYU is No. 37, with an average score of 194.655.
On vault (48.750; 35th), the Broncos are led by junior Gabriela Bouza (9.835; 48th); on beam (48.610; T-38th), Boise State is led by sophomore Hope Masiado (9.770; T-125th); and on floor (48.395; 50th), junior Tatum Bruden leads the team (9.810; T-133rd).
THE ROAD TO 10.0
Junior Emily Muhlenhaupt put together a near-perfect 9.975 on bars in San Jose, Calif. (Jan. 26), tying a school record that has been achieved six times. She also hit the mark in San Jose, Feb. 1, 2019, becoming just the third individual in school history to do it – Krystine Jacobsen did it three times, and Ciera Perkins did it once.
If Muhlenhaupt, who has also posted a 9.925 twice already this season, is able to notch a 10.0, it will be the first such score on bars in school history, and just the fifth on any apparatus all-time. Most recently, Perkins registered a 10.0 on vault, Jan. 30, 2015. It was the third perfect vault in school history, a mark also achieved by Julie Wagner (March 20, 1993) and Leslie Mott (March 23, 1996). On beam, Marie Lucas registered a 10.0, Feb. 27, 2002.
WEEKLY HONORS FOR THE BRONCOS
Senior Isabella Amado and junior Emily Muhlenhaupt were named Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Specialists of the Week for their performances on beam and bars, respectively, against BYU, Jan. 31.
For Amado, a senior from Panama City, Panama, the accolade is the first of her career. She recorded a season-high 9.900 against the Cougars, picking up her second beam title of the season.
Muhlenhaupt earned a 9.925 against BYU, picking up her third bars title of the season and the third MRGC Specialist of the Week honor of 2020. She now has six-career Bars Specialist of the Week honors and five-career victories in the event.
FIVE-STRAIGHT TITLES
The Broncos captured their fifth-consecutive Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference title this past season, the longest championship streak for a Boise State athletic program since the football team also won five-straight in the Western Athletic Conference from 2002-06. The only program with a longer streak in Boise State history was the wrestling team, which won seven-straight Big Sky Conference Championships from 1974-80.
12-STRAIGHT REGIONALS
Boise State made its 12th-consecutive NCAA Regional Championship appearance this past season. Competing in the Corvallis Regional in the new NCAA postseason format, the Broncos advanced to the Regional Final, finishing second in the opening session. The Broncos, which entered the regional ranked No. 12 – the highest ranking entering regionals in school history – finished fourth in the Regional Final.
AMERICA'S HIGHEST GPA
The Broncos combined for a team GPA of 3.77 this past academic year, the third time in four seasons the team finished with the highest grade-point average in the country amongst gymnastics programs, per the WCGA. Boise State also boasted the nation's highest GPA in both 2015-16 and 2017-18. The Broncos had the second-highest GPA in the country in 2016-17, and the third-highest in 2014-15. Boise State also boasted 13 WCGA Scholastic All-Americans.
TEAM CAPTAINS
Seniors Isabella Amado and Courtney McGregor were voted team captains for the 2020 season by their teammates. Each competed in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio, for Panama and New Zealand, respectively, and each plans to go to medical school following their competitive career. Both Amado and McGregor have been named Academic All-MRGC and WCGA Scholastic All-America in each of their three seasons with the Broncos.
