PROVO, Utah – The Boise State gymnastics team posted its highest score of the season Saturday, nearly pulling off an upset in the same city in which the Broncos captured a fifth-consecutive Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Championship this past season. After leading through three rotations, the Broncos ultimately fell to 16th-ranked BYU, 196.375-196.150, at Smith Fieldhouse.
Gabriela Bouza tied for meet titles on vault and beam, Emily Muhlenhaupt took home a share of the bars title and Hope Masiado also grabbed a share of the crown on beam.
"Our bars squad got back to normal this week, and that line-up can compete with any team in the country," head coach Tina Bird said. "We are continuing to improve on vault and floor, and I fully expect beam to be back to normal next week at home."
The Broncos (2-5, 0-3 MRGC), which posted scores of 49.000 or higher on both vault and floor for the first time this season, led after each of the first three rotations, but the Cougars (8-2, 6-0 MRGC), ranked 12th nationally on floor, posted a 49.400 in their final rotation to overtake Boise State.
Muhlenhaupt, a junior and the 11th-ranked competitor on bars in the country, started the Broncos off with a 9.950 in the first rotation. It was her fifth score of at least 9.925 in six meets this season, and it resulted in her fourth bars title of the year and the sixth of her career. Fellow junior Tatum Bruden set a career high with a 9.875, helping the Broncos to a 49.325 and a first-rotation lead.
Boise State would build on that lead after moving to vault (49.000), where Bouza (9.850) picked up her fourth-consecutive vault title, and then again on floor (49.175), where four Broncos established career highs.
On vault, sophomore Samantha Smith (9.825) and redshirt junior Maddi Nilson (9.775) each set career highs; and on floor, senior Isabella Amado (9.875), freshman Adriana Popp (9.850), Nilson (9.825) and sophomore Hope Masiado (9.800) each surpassed their previous career bests.
"I was proud to see so many personal bests tonight," Bird said. "But Izzy, one of our team captains - her hitting on both floor and beam was key."
The Broncos held an advantage of 0.525 entering the final rotation, and right out of the gate, Bouza tied for her second event title of the evening with a 9.875 on beam. Masiado also grabbed a share of the beam title – the first in any event of her career – with her career-best performance, and freshman Erin Elkabchi tied her season high with a 9.850. But Boise State was ultimately forced to count a fall on beam, and BYU nearly matched its season high in its best event to move ahead and claim the dual victory.
Masiado, competing in the all-around for just the second time in her career, recorded a 39.200.
After competing on the road in five of the first six meets of the 2020 season, Boise State will return home next week, hosting a quad meet at ExtraMile Arena. Utah State, Sacramento State and UC Davis will all travel to Boise for a competition slated to begin at 7 p.m., Friday (Feb. 21).
