BOISE, Idaho –
The Boise State gymnastics team scored season highs on vault and floor en route to a season-best 196.800 and a share of first place – with Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference rival Utah State – at a quadrangular Friday at ExtraMile Arena. UC Davis (195.850) finished third and Sacramento State (192.700) finished fourth.

Gabriela Bouza grabbed a share of the vault title, Emily Muhlenhaupt picked up a bars victory and Adriana Popp captured her first-career event title, earning a share of the win on floor.

Boise State trailed Utah State by 0.150 entering the final rotation, but recorded four 9.875s and a career-best 9.900 from Popp on floor to tie the Aggies in the team's annual Pink Meet. The Broncos had been in second place following each of the first three rotations.

"I am proud of the team for digging in during the week and getting better inch by inch," head coach Tina Bird said. "They showed that they will fight for every routine and that our season goals are still attainable."

The Broncos began the evening on vault, establishing a season high with a 49.150 – the fourth-consecutive week in which the team has improved its score in the event. Five competitors either tied or set career highs – Samantha Smith (9.850) and Tessa Otuafi (9.800) eclipsed their previous bests, while Bouza (9.875), Hope Masiado (9.825) and Maddi Nilson (9.775) tied the highest scores of their careers.

For Bouza, the victory was her fifth-straight on vault.

The Broncos' bars line-up was at full strength for the first time all year, but it was once again Muhlenhaupt who stole the show. She recorded her second 9.975 of the season and the third of her career, once again tying the school and MRGC record. She and Krystine Jacobsen are the only gymnasts in school history to achieve a 9.975 on bars on three different occasions.
Despite putting only five competitors up in each of the first six meets of the season, the group still ranked 19th nationally entering tonight. Alexis Stokes, the defending MRGC bars champion, made her season debut, bringing the unit to full strength. She registered a 9.825 in her first routine of the year.

The Broncos posted a team score of 49.225 on bars, but Utah State took control of first place midway through the meet. The teams maintained their positions following the third rotation, with Boise State scoring a 49.025 on beam.

Nilson recorded a career-high 9.875 on floor, a score that was then matched by Smith, who also set a career best, Isabella Amado and Tatum Bruden. In the Broncos' final routine of the evening, Popp set a career best with a 9.900, earning a share of the individual title and moving Boise State into a tie with the Aggies for first place.

Boise State recorded a season-high 49.400 on floor, and scored at least 49.000 in each of the four events for the first time this season.

After improving to 4-5-1 on the year (0-3-1 MRGC), Boise State will return to where it has spent a majority of the 2020 season – the road. The Broncos will travel to Cedar City, Utah, for a conference showdown with 19th-ranked Southern Utah. The Broncos, making their sixth road trip in eight meets, will square off against the Thunderbirds Feb. 28 (Friday) at 7 p.m.
