Boise State clinched a first-round bye at March 1-4's Mountain West Tournament with Saturday's win at San Diego State, and moved alone into second place, a half-game ahead of San José State.
With Fresno State already having the top seed wrapped up, the Broncos control their own destiny for the 2-seed, being able to clinch it by winning its final three games.Â
LAST TIME OUT
Boise State won its second-straight game and clinched a first-round bye at the Mountain West Tournament with Saturday's 69-67 overtime victory at San Diego State.
Redshirt senior forward A'Shanti Coleman scored the winning basket with 2.8 seconds left in overtime to cap a 16-point, eight-rebounds day, while sophomore Jade Loville posted her first-career double-double, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
The Broncos erased a 55-48 deficit over the final four minutes to force overtime, and, in the extra session, got six points from Coleman to down the Aztecs.
WHO'S NEXT
The Broncos begin their final three-game stretch Wednesday, hosting San José State for a 7 p.m. tip.
The Spartans captured the first meeting of the year back on Jan. 29, beating the Broncos, 74-61, in San Jose. The Spartan win snapped Boise State's nine-game winning streak in the series.
That win, however, has been the last thus far for the Spartans, who have dropped the next four heading into Wednesday's rematch.
San José State is led by the play of point guard Ayzhiana Basallo (19.6 ppg, 4.83 apg) and center Tyra Whitehead (14.6 ppg, 10.1 rpg).
SERIES HISTORY
Boise State leads the all-time series against San José State, 22-12.
San José State's 74-61 win on Jan. 29 snapped Boise State's nine-game winning streak in the series, however, the Broncos have won nine-straight against the Spartans in Boise.
SECOND GO-AROUND
Boise State will aim for a split of the season series with Wednesday's meeting against San José State. A win for the Broncos would avoid the first season sweep by a conference opponent since Boise State dropped both meetings with Colorado State in 2015-16.
With a game also remaining against UNLV (Feb. 24), who beat the Broncos in Las Vegas on Jan. 8, Boise State will have to avoid another season sweep there.
IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Boise State has found itself, as well as a handful of players, ranked fairly high in early national stat rankings through Feb. 16.
As a team, the Broncos rank 10th in assists (448). The Broncos' 44.5 field-goal percentage ranks 33rd, and the team's 185 3-pointers are 59th in the country.
Individually, redshirt senior point guard Jayde Christopher is second in the nation with 210 assists, and with 7.78 assists per game. Senior guard Riley Lupfer is fourth in the country with 82 3-pointers made, and 12th with 3.04 triples made per game.
COLEMAN IN THE CLUTCH
Redshirt senior forward A'Shanti Coleman added another game-winning shot to her Boise State resumé Saturday in San Diego, driving and scoring with 2.8 seconds left in overtime to cap the Broncos' 69-67 win.
Coleman finished the game with 16 points and eight rebounds, and scored six of Boise State's 10 points in overtime.
It wrapped a week in which Coleman was Boise State's go-to late. In Wednesday's 74-69 win at Air Force, the San Francisco native scored seven of Boise State's final 10 points as the Broncos pulled away after the Falcons cut it to 64-63 with 3:55 to go.
UNDERRATED WEEK FOR COLEMAN
The late-game heroics aside, A'Shanti Coleman had a very underrated week for the Broncos on the road, averaging 13.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and shooting 54.5 percent from the field.
Coleman went 5-for-7 from the field Wednesday at Air Force, scoring 11 points with four rebounds and two blocks, then followed with 16 points and eight boards and a block at San Diego State.
LOVILLE LIGHTS UP THE AZTECS AGAIN
Guard Jade Loville continued her impressive sophomore campaign Saturday with her first-career double-double, notching 20 points and 11 rebounds at San Diego State.
Loville frustrated the Aztecs for the second time this season, following up her Jan. 11 career day of 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting with a 9-for-15 shooting effort.
Overall, it was Loville's eighth double figure-scoring game of the season, and brought her scoring average in Mountain West contests to 7.1 points on 44.4-percent shooting (44-for-99).
CHRISTOPHER SETS ASSIST MARK
Redshirt senior point guard Jayde Christopher set the Boise State single-season assists record Feb. 12 at Air Force, passing out 12 helpers to bring her tally for the campaign to an even 200.
With her fifth assist of the game, Christopher tallied assist no. 193 to eclipse the previous mark of 192 set by Yaiza Rodriguez in 2016-17.
In just two seasons at Boise State, Christopher has skyrocketed up the program's career assists list, a feat made even more impressive by the fact that she's only played 60 games in the Blue and Orange.
Christopher, with 392 career assists at Boise State (2018-present), already ranks third all-time in program history.
EYEING THE MOUNTAIN WEST MARK
With Boise State's single-season assist record already in her possession, Jayde Christopher can set her sights on the Mountain West season mark of 243, set by New Mexico's Cherise Beynon in 2017-18.
Christopher, with 210 assists through Saturday's win at San Diego State, has at least four more games (three regular-season, one Mountain West Tournament) to dish out 34 more helpers and eclipse Beynon's mark.
STAYING PERFECT IN OT
Saturday's win at San Diego State brought the Broncos to 2-0 this season in overtime contests.
Previously, the Broncos defeated New Mexico, 83-82, in overtime back on Dec. 4, in Boise. Boise State has now played at least two overtime games in seven of the last eight seasons, going 10-3 over those contests.
