PALM DESERT, Calif. – Sophomore Hugo Townsend fired a 4-under 68 and sits in tie for fourth after one round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
The Boden, Sweden native played bogey-free golf and made three of his four birdies on the back nine. His effort led the Broncos, who are in fourth place at 3-under, 285. Boise State is seven shots back of tournament-leader Oregon.
Junior Skyler Eubank, the defending champion in the event, carded a 1-under 71 and is tied for 20th. Sophomore Cameron Barzekoff is tied for 30th with an even-par 72. Seniors Mason Schulze (tied 53rd, +2, 74) and Joe Neuheisel (tied 81st, +4, 76) rounded out the Bronco lineup.
"Overall, I'm pleased with the way we battled it out today," Boise State assistant coach Kavan Eubank said. "Conditions got tough today and with the wind, we had a couple of shots slip away from us. However, we did a great job of bouncing back and finishing under par as a team."
Boise State is top Mountain West team in the tournament so far, placing ahead of tournament-host Wyoming, Fresno State and No. 5 Colorado State.
Round two for the Broncos begins at 9:40 a.m. Saturday.
