CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Boise State gymnastics team led after two rotations, but ultimately fell to No. 21 Southern Utah (196.000-195.000) at America First Event Center, Friday.
Junior Emily Muhlenhaupt captured her sixth bars title of the season – and the eighth of her career – with a 9.900, and sophomore Hope Masiado recorded the first all-around victory of her career.
With the win, Muhlenhaupt moved into a tie for 10th place on Boise State's career list with Bronco greats Johnna Evans (1995-98) and Carla Chambers (2002-05). The victory also moved her into a tie for fourth on the single-season list, trailing only Krystine Jacobsen (9; 2016), Lindsay Ward (8; 2008) and Anne Staker (7; 1991).
Despite Muhlenhaupt's score and a 9.875 from sophomore Alexis Stokes, the Broncos trailed the Thunderbirds after the first rotation (49.225-48.500).
The deficit would be short lived however, as Boise State posted a 48.900 on vault, compared to a 48.175 on bars for SUU. Midway through the meet, the Broncos held a 97.400-97.350 advantage.
The Thunderbirds regained the lead following the third rotation, and added to it in the fourth, claiming the dual victory. The loss was the first for the Broncos to the Thunderbirds since March 13, 2015 (196.325-196.225).
Junior Gariela Bouza (9.800) led the Broncos on vault, freshman Adriana Popp (9.850) led Boise State on floor and Masiado and Bouza tied for the team high on beam (9.875).
Masiado recorded a 38.575 in the all-around, registering her first-career victory in just her fourth meet competing in all four events.
Following its sixth road meet through the first eight weeks of the season, the Broncos will return home next week, the first of three-straight home meets to close the regular season. First up is a rematch with Southern Utah, scheduled for 6 p.m., Thursday (March 5) at ExtraMile Arena.
