THE MEET
After recording its highest score of the season this past week at ExtraMile Arena (196.800), the Boise State gymnastics team will return this week to where it has spent a majority of the 2020 season – the road. The Broncos will travel to Cedar City, Utah, for a Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference showdown with 21st-ranked Southern Utah. The Broncos (4-5-1, 0-3-1 MRGC), making their sixth road trip in eight meets, will square off against the Thunderbirds (5-6-0, 2-3-0 MRGC), Friday (Feb. 28) at America First Event Center at 7 p.m.
A live stream will be available at Pluto TV (Channel 455), and live scoring will be available at suutbirds.com.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Broncos checked in at No. 35 in this week's edition of the Road to Nationals rankings, the first release involving the National Qualifying Score (NQS). The Broncos' initial NQS of the 2020 season is 195.115. The team has recorded its highest scores of the season the last two meets, scoring 196.800 this past week in a home quadrangular against Sacramento State, UC Davis and MRGC rival Utah State, and 196.150 at then-16th-ranked BYU, Feb. 15.
Boise State is led by its bars line-up, which ranks 20th nationally (49.080). Individually, junior Emily Muhlenhaupt ranks fourth nationally in the event (9.940), trailing only Maggie Nichols (Oklahoma; 9.960), Kyla Ross (UCLA; 9.960) and Maddie Karr (Denver; 9.945).
The Broncos rank 35th on beam (48.765), tied for 35th on vault (48.830) and 42nd on floor (48.725). Individually, junior Gabriela Bouza (T39th; 9.845) leads both the Broncos and the MRGC on vault, while senior Isabella Amado (T86th; 9.815) leads the team on beam and ranks sixth in the conference. Tatum Bruden (T117th; 9.820) leads Boise State on floor.
THE ROAD TO 10.0
This season junior Emily Muhlenhaupt has twice put together near-perfect 9.975s on bars – in San Jose, Calif. (Jan. 26) and in a quadrangular at home (Feb. 21) – tying a school record that has been achieved seven times. She initially hit the mark in San Jose, Feb. 1, 2019, becoming just the third individual in school history to do it – Krystine Jacobsen did it three times, and Ciera Perkins did it once.
If Muhlenhaupt, who has also posted 9.950 and three 9.925s already this season, is able to notch a 10.0, it will be the first such score on bars in school history, and just the fifth on any apparatus all-time. Most recently, Perkins registered a 10.0 on vault, Jan. 30, 2015. It was the third perfect vault in school history, a mark also achieved by Julie Wagner (March 20, 1993) and Leslie Mott (March 23, 1996). On beam, Marie Lucas registered a 10.0, Feb. 27, 2002.
WEEKLY HONORS FOR THE BRONCOS
Boise State juniors Gabriela Bouza and Emily Muhlenhaupt were each named Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Specialists of the Week for the second-straight week for their performances on vault and bars, respectively. Bouza's accolades are the first of her career, and Muhlenhaupt now has five such awards this season and eight for her career.
Senior Isabella Amado also garnered her first-career MRGC Specialist of the Week accolade earlier this season, picking up the award after winning her second beam title of the season.
FIVE-STRAIGHT TITLES
The Broncos captured their fifth-consecutive Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference title this past season, the longest championship streak for a Boise State athletic program since the football team also won five-straight in the Western Athletic Conference from 2002-06. The only program with a longer streak in Boise State history was the wrestling team, which won seven-straight Big Sky Conference Championships from 1974-80.
12-STRAIGHT REGIONALS
Boise State made its 12th-consecutive NCAA Regional Championship appearance this past season. Competing in the Corvallis Regional in the new NCAA postseason format, the Broncos advanced to the Regional Final, finishing second in the opening session. The Broncos, which entered the regional ranked No. 12 – the highest ranking entering regionals in school history – finished fourth in the Regional Final.
AMERICA'S HIGHEST GPA
The Broncos combined for a team GPA of 3.77 this past academic year, the third time in four seasons the team finished with the highest grade-point average in the country amongst gymnastics programs, per the WCGA. Boise State also boasted the nation's highest GPA in both 2015-16 and 2017-18. The Broncos had the second-highest GPA in the country in 2016-17, and the third-highest in 2014-15. Boise State also boasted 13 WCGA Scholastic All-Americans.
TEAM CAPTAINS
Seniors Isabella Amado and Courtney McGregor were voted team captains for the 2020 season by their teammates. Each competed in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio, for Panama and New Zealand, respectively, and each plans to go to medical school following their competitive career. Both Amado and McGregor have been named Academic All-MRGC and WCGA Scholastic All-America in each of their three seasons with the Broncos.
