GARDEN CITY, Idaho – Boise State baseball fans had their first chance in decades to a see a Bronco team play at home. Led by Travis Weston, 3,279 were treated to a shutout win by the hometown squad.
Weston (1-1), a redshirt sophomore, spun seven-shutout innings while striking out 10. He walked two and yielded just two hits as the Broncos (1-3) knocked off visiting Northern Colorado (2-6).
Boise State scored all the runs it needed in the second when two runners crossed the plate. With one out, Joe Yorke and Cory Meyer singled. Myles Harris walked to load the bases and Grant Kerry drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right. An error allowed Meyer to come home with the second run of the inning.
The Broncos added a pair of runs in the sixth. Meyer singled with one out and moved to third on a two-out double by Kerry. Cole Posey followed with a dying quail into right-center to drive in two and increase the lead to 4-0.
Weston was in control throughout, fanning at least one batter in every inning. Wesley Harper recorded four outs before Jay Baggs came on to pick up the final-two outs and earn his first save.
"Overall what a special night," Boise State head coach Gary Van Tol said. "Packed house, when they had the 'Boise State' chant going the first time, I got goose bumps. It was nice to get the lead. It allowed us to be more aggressive. The vibe, the ceremony before the game, you couldn't have scripted it any better."
Boise State and Northern Colorado continue their four-game series with a doubleheader, Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
