GARDEN CITY, Idaho – Boise State freshmen Torin Montgomery and Reagan Doss each homered in the nightcap and the Broncos completed a doubleheader sweep of Northern Colorado with a 12-9 victory, Saturday night.
Boise State (3-3) captured the opener 5-4 when junior Christian Padilla delivered a game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning. The single-admission doubleheader drew 1,661 fans.
In the first game, Geon Hyoung Kim singled to open the bottom of the first, took third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chase Adkison. Michael Hicks doubled before moving to third on an infield single by Torin Montgomery and scored on an error.
The Bears (2-8) tied the game with two runs in the top of the third inning off Boise State starter Mitch Lines. In the bottom of the sixth, Kase Ogata was hit by a pitch to open the frame. Grant Kerry worked a walk and pinch runner Dawson Martin advanced to second. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Padilla singled to score Martin. The Broncos added a run on a ground out by Kim.
Northern Colorado rallied to tie the game with a run in the eighth and another in the ninth. In the bottom of the 10th, Joe Yorke walked and was replaced by pinch runner Myles Harris. Dawson Martin walked against Connor Anderson (0-2). After Kerry reached on an error, Padilla drove to 1-0 pitch into right-center for a single that knocked in the game-winner.
Cameron Sommer (1-0), the third Boise State pitcher, worked three innings to pick up the win.
Boise State parlayed a big inning poor defense by the Bears to win the second game.
After spotting the Bears two runs in the top of the first, the Broncos rallied to tie the game in home half of the frame. With two outs, Hicks doubled and Montgomery tripled to score Hicks. Myles Harris singled to tie the game.
The Broncos scored seven times in the fifth to erase a 4-3 deficit. Boise State collected four hits in the inning and took advantage of three errors by Northern Colorado.
The Bears closed within 10-6, but the lead swelled back to five when Montgomery hit a solo blast to right field leading off the bottom of the seventh.
The Bears tallied twice in the eighth to cut the lead to 11-8 and the Broncos responded with a solo home run by Reagan Doss leading off the bottom of the eighth.
Northern Colorado scored a run in the ninth and put the tying run at the plate before succumbing. Hunter Omlid (1-1) worked four innings for the win and Daylon Matthews (0-1) took the loss.
