GARDEN CITY, Idaho – Three pitchers combined for a one-hitter and Boise State completed a four-game sweep of Northern Colorado with an 8-2 victory, Sunday.
Brayden Spears (1-0) pitched four-shutout innings in relief and struck out five to earn the win for the Broncos (4-3).
"That was his (Spears') best outing, including the fall," Boise State head coach Gary Van Tol said. It's really difficult (to sweep a four-game series). When you come out on a Sunday with an opportunity, you have to be a little bit greedy."
Each team scored twice in the second inning and the game remained tied until Boise State broke through for two runs in the sixth against Northern Colorado (2-9) reliever Sam Wyatt (0-2).
Joe Yorke started the rally with a four-pitch walk. Cory Meyer followed with an infield single and the runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Christian Padilla gave Boise State the lead with an RBI-ground out. Meyer took third on a ground out by Grant Kerry and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-2.
The Broncos broke the game open in the seventh with three runs. Michael Hicks and Yorke each contributed a run-scoring single and Padilla added a sacrifice fly.
Geon Hyoung Kim capped the scoring and a three-hit day with a solo home run leading off the eighth.
Sunday's game drew 961 fans and the four-game series attendance was 5,901. Boise State continues its 11-game homestand Friday against Seattle U with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
