Boise State's swimming and diving program just completed its 14th season as a program.  The 2019-20 campaign marked the second season in the Christine Mabile era with the team going 6-2 in team duals and extending its home win streak to a national-best 27 straight, stretching over 10 years. For the third-straight year the Broncos finished in the top-10 at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships at Cleveland, Ohio. This month BroncoSports.com will be taking a look back on the team's accomplishments and memorable moments from the past season. The following is the second installment of the Year In Review.
 

SPRING SEMESTER IN REVIEW

The spring semester featured seven competitions overall, including three dual meets with Boise State sweeping them all. 

The Broncos had 18 student-athletes combine for 69 career-best times/scores in the spring with 40 coming from 12 veterans and 29 being recorded by six freshmen. Included in the 69 career-best times/scores were 60 that were personal-bests. Twelve veterans accounted for 35 personal-best times/scores, while six of the freshmen tallied  25. 

Boise State would end the semester with 12 All-Mountain West honors for top-eight finishes at the conference championships in Minneapolis. The Blue and Orange also sent seven swimmers to the CSCAA National Invitational Championships where they recorded the program's third-straight top-10 finish. In addition, for the first time ever the entire dive team qualified for the NCAA Diving Zone Championships. 

 

MEET 1: UCLA Diving Invitational

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 17-19, 2020) - Boise State sent its three divers to Los Angeles where they were led by junior Tatum Thompkins at the invite recording the top Bronco finish on both springboards. Unfortunately, Marti Erlam would suffer a injury that kept her out of competition until the NCAA Zones.

Thompkins led the Bronco divers on the 1-meter dive tallying a 238.55 to place 20th out of 55 participants and fourth out of 12 Mountain West competitors. Taylor Clark scored a 215.30 to place 30th overall, while Erlam was injured on her first dive of the meet. Thompkins also led Boise State on the 3-meter springboard recording a 236.05 to place 24th, fifth-best out of the Mountain West divers.


MEET 2: At Northern Arizona, First Dual

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Jan. 24, 2020) - Boise State won the first of two dual meets at Northern Arizona the weekend of Jan. 24-25 as the Broncos claimed a 73-56 victory on day one. Boise State won four of the eight events competed highlighted by individual wins from Molly Hogg and Beatriz Zoppei, as well as two relay victories.

The meet opened with the Broncos winning the 400-yard medley relay with its A team featuring Hogg, Carly Palmer, Zoppei and Robin Pinger winning with a time of 3:44.17. 

Boise State dominated the 50-yard butterfly claiming four of the top five places led by Zoppei's winning time of 25.10. The Broncos also claimed three of the top four spots in the 50-yard backstroke with Hogg bringing home first-place with a 25.96, Tina Andrasek came in second recording a 26.44. 

The final race was the 800-yard freestyle relay where the Boise State A team of Hayley Hill, Lucia Davis, Emma Brady and Madison Frederick recorded the winning time of 7:33.40.  

Broncos who recorded career-best times/scores included: Andrasek (50-yard freestyle, 24.78 / 50-yard backstroke, 26.44), Cassie Barkhorn (50-yard butterfly, 26.34), Hill (100 back, 1:01.89), Delaney Phillips (50-yard breaststroke, 30.60), Lauren Sale (50 back, 26.59 / 50 fly, 25.84), Brittany Wen (50 free, 24.35), Georgia Zacest (50 breast, 30.77) and Zoppei (50 fly, 25.10).


MEET 3: At Northern Arizona, Second Dual

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Jan. 24, 2020) - Boise State edged NAU in the second meeting defeating the Lumberjacks 157-143. Hill and Katie McCoy recorded two wins apiece to lead Boise State. In all, seven Broncos accounted for nine wins out of 17 events. 

Hill claimed victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:54.44, then followed with a time of 5:06.03 to take the 500-yard free. McCoy tallied a pair of wins taking the 200-yard backstroke by clocking a time of 2:03.95, then claimed first-place in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:05.83. 

Five other Broncos recorded individual victories versus NAU. Madesyn Ronquillio claimed the 100 back with a 56.38; Pinger took first in the 100-yard breaststroke swimming a season-best 1:04.54, Phillips (2:23.83) won the 200 breast and Zoppei (56.15) took the 100-yard butterfly.

Broncos turning in career times/scores were: Clark (platform, 225), Frederick (50-yard backstroke, 27.09 relay), Lauren Yon (200-yard breaststroke, 2:20.78 aa) and Zoppei (200-yard butterfly, 2:05.64 aa).


MEET 4: Washington State and Senior Day

BOISE, Idaho (Feb. 1) - Boise State cruised to victory over Washington State on Senior Day by a 192-60 score. The win saw Boise State claim first-place in 13 of the 14 events raced as the Broncos extended their home win streak to a national-leading 27 straight. 

The day was complete dominance by the Blue and Orange as they raced out to their largest victory of the season. Davis, Hogg and Emmie Jennings led Boise State with two individual victories apiece. In all, eight different Broncos won an event. In addition, the home team won both relays, the 400-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle.  

Davis had a strong meet against the Cougars claiming titles in the 200 free and 500 free with times of 1:51.47 (season best) and 4:55.93, respectively. Hogg led the charge in the backstrokes winning the 100 back with a 55.31, then followed by claiming the 200 back on a 1:58.92. Jennings finished her home career in style taking titles in the 50 free (23.79) and 100-yard butterfly (56.78). 

Hayley Hill opened the day claiming the first individual race of the meet clocking a 10:18.15 in the 1,000-yard free. Lauren Vitort won the 100 freestyle in 51.36, while Wen claimed the 200 fly with a 2:06.12, Palmer took the 100-yard breaststroke tallying a 1:02.94, followed by McCoy who won the 200-yard individual medley recording a 2:02.11. 

Career-best times came from: Frederick (100-yard backstroke, 56.35, relay), Phillips (200-yard breaststroke, 2:20.24), Yon (50 breast, 30.79 / 100 breast, 1:06.24) and Zoppei (100-yard freestyle, 54.28 / 100 back, 59.23).

 

MEET 5: Mountain West Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Feb. 19-22)  - Boise State finished the Mountain West Championships in a pack of teams clustered together. The Broncos placed seventh overall with 807 points, 96 points out of third. San Diego State defended its conference title from 2019 with a MW record total of 1,463.5 points followed by Nevada with 1,015.5, Wyoming was at 903, UNLV 875.5, Colorado State 830.5, Fresno State 810, then the Broncos. Meanwhile, New Mexico, San Jose State and Air Force finished a distant eighth through 10th.

By the end of the four day meet seven Broncos combined for 12 All-Mountain West accolades. Five Broncos earned two All-Mountain West honors apiece in Davis, Hill, Hogg, McCoy and Ronquillio. In addition, two others Jennings and Vitort received all-conference honors in one event each.

DAY 1: Boise State tallied 132 points on the opening day of the meet. It was a light day of events with only three, one diving and two swimming, being contested. The Boise State divers recorded two top-12 finishes and the swimmers recorded season-best times in both relays.

Both Thompkins and Clark recorded career-highs on the 1-meter springboard during the B final in the afternoon. Thompkins scored a new NCAA Zone Qualifying score of 279.00 to take 10th-place overall, while Clark placed 12th out of 30 competitors with a score of 260.60.

DAY 2: Boise State advanced seven to the finals on the second day of the Championships with three placing in the top-eight of their respective races.  Davis (4:49.04) had the top finish of the night taking third in the 500-yard freestyle, followed by Hill (4:51.32) who came in seventh. Meanwhile, McCoy (1:59.96) set a new career best twice while taking fifth-place in the 200-yard individual medley. 

DAY 3: Five top-10 results highlighted the third day of the MW Championships for Boise State. The Broncos' top performers where Vitort (1:50.57) who placed eighth in the 200-yard freestyle, as well as, Hogg (54.69) and Ronquillio (54.75) who placed sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke. In all, Boise State qualified 13 swimmers to the finals.

DAY 4: Boise State saw six top-eight finishes to highlight the final day of the MW Championships at Minneapolis. Top performers on the day were Davis (16:52.28) and Hill (16:52.88) in the 1,650-yard freestyle where they placed fourth and fifth, respectively. The Broncos had three place in the top-eight of the 200-yard backstroke led by  Hogg (1:57.43) in fourth, followed by Ronquillio (1:57.55) in fifth and McCoy (1:58.53) in eighth. Meanwhile, Jennings (50.32) closed her career with a sixth-place (tie) finish in the 100-yard freestyle.

Overall, 15 Broncos set at least one career best and combined for 34 during the four days: Andrasek (50-yard backstroke, 25.71 relay / 100 back, 56.31 relay / 200-yard individual medley, 2:06.79), Barkhorn (100-yard butterfly, 56.65), Brady (50 fly, 1:01.92), Frederick (50 back, 26.65), Clark (1-meter, 260.60 / platform, 243.65), McCoy (200 IM, 1:59.96 / 400 IM, 4:18.79), Palmer (50-yard freestyle, 24.07 / 200-yard breaststroke, 2:20.83 / 50 fly, 25.77), Phillips (50 breast, 29.67 / 100 breast, 1:03.88 / 200 breast, 2:19.45 / 200 IM, 2:07.41), Ronquillio (50 free, 23.92 / 200 back, 1:57.55 / 50 fly, 25.35), Sale (100 back, 55.69 / 50 back, 26.29), Anahi Schreuders (50 free, 24.13 / 100 free, 52.91), Thompkins (1-meter, 279.00 / platform, 219.15), Vitort (50 free, 23.54), Von (50 breast, 30.31) and Zoppei (50 free, 23.64 / 50 back, 26.61 / 100 fly, 54.27 / 200 fly, 2:03.70).  

 

MEET 6: NCAA Zone E Diving Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (March 9-11, 2020) - Boise State's three divers completed the NCAA Zone E Championships at Federal Way, Wash. Clark, Thompkins and Erlam all opened the meet on the 1-meter springboard recording two top-30 finishes. Erlam led the trio on the 1-meter scoring 240.90 to place 24th, while Clark took 29th with a 229.30 and Thompkins finished with a 221.30. 

Tuesday, the championships turned to the 3-meter springboard competition. Thompkins led the Broncos with a team-high 242.15 followed by Clark at 228.60 and Erlam with a 217.90.

Wednesday saw the platform dive take center stage on the final day of the meet. Boise State's Clark and Thompkins took part in the dive with Clark placing 22nd scoring 207.95 and Thompkins 32nd with a 183.45.

 

MEET 7: CSCAA National Invitational Championships

CLEVELAND, Ohio (March 12, 2020) - Boise State's Hogg placed-third in the 50-yard backstroke to lead Boise State at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships (NIC). Hogg was one of seven Broncos who were in Cleveland for the NIC which was abruptly canceled following the first day because of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. 

Boise State finished the meet in seventh-place with 159 points giving the Broncos their third-straight top-10 finish out over 50 teams that were at the meet.

Hogg began the day swimming a 25.49 in the morning preliminaries of the 50 backstroke to place seventh. She then clocked a career-best in the finals with a 25.27 to finish third. Ronquillio competed in the 50 back as well recording a 26.02 in the B final to place 13th overall. Zoppei placed 15th overall in the 50-yard butterfly turning in a 25.14. 

Boise State also scored in two relays on the day, the first was the 200-yard freestyle relay where Hogg, Ronquillio, Zoppei and Phillips placed 19th with a time of 1:35.62. 
The Broncos fared better in the 400-yard medley relay featuring Ronquillio, Palmer, Zoppei and Brady who clocked a 3:43.71 to place eighth.

Boise State's divers Clark, Thompkins and Erlam who competed at the NCAA Zone E Championships earlier in the week also tallied 72 points with their results at the Zone meet that counted towards the team's NIC scores.
