FINAL RESULTS
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Senior Emily Muhlenhaupt and the Boise State gymnastics team's bars line-up put the Broncos in front in the evening's opening rotation, and the team never looked back, winning the season-opening meet at No. 13 Oregon State (194.300-191.950) at Gill Coliseum, Friday.
The competition was the Broncos' first since their 2020 season was canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"The team came out tonight with grateful and determined hearts, which led to a record number of stuck landings as a team," head coach Tina Bird said. "We've been working really hard on landings, so to start off like this is so indicative of what this team can accomplish.
"We treat each competition as a bonus and leave it all out there on the floor. I'm so proud of all of them."
Muhlenhaupt claimed her 10th-career bars title with a 9.950, moving into a tie for 10th place on the Broncos' all-time list (Shani Remme, 2016-19). She also grabbed a share of her first-career beam title with a 9.850.
Oregon State opened the season at No. 13 in the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association Preseason Poll, the highest-ranked team the Broncos have defeated since edging No. 8 Washington, March 15, 2018 (197.000-196.950).
The Broncos swept the top six spots on bars, including a 9.925 from freshman Emily Lopez in her first-collegiate routine, ultimately opening up a three-point lead after two rotations. The lead would prove to be insurmountable, as Boise State cruised to the season-opening victory.
Junior Samantha Smith led the Broncos on vault, scoring a 9.800, and redshirt senior Maddi Nilson led Boise State on floor, scoring a 9.775.
Boise State will open the home portion of its season against 17th-ranked BYU next Saturday, Jan. 23. The Broncos and Cougars are slated to begin their meet at 6 p.m., and the meet will be streamed live at BroncoSports.com.
