Alston a Leading Candidate for Erving Award

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Boise State redshirt senior Derrick Alston, Jr. was named one of 10 finalists for the 2021 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday. Named after Class of 1993 Hall of Famer and 16-year professional basketball player Julius Erving, the annual honor in its seventh year recognizes the top small forwards in Division I men's college basketball.
Alston is the leading scorer on a Boise State team riding a school-record 13-game win streak and ranked No. 15 in the NCAA NET rating system. He is averaging 16.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game, shooting 45.2 percent from the floor, 38 percent from beyond the arc and 88.3 percent from the free throw line. Alston has scored in double figures 12 out of 14 games this year, including seven 20-point performances..
Alston made the top 10 for the Erving Award last season and was named to the preseason watchlist after announcing he would return for his senior season. He and Gonzaga's Corey Kispert are the only players to make the list as finalists each of the last two seasons.
In late February, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Erving and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2021 Julius Erving Award will be presented April 9, 2021, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Point Guard Award, the Jerry West Shooting Guard Award, the Karl Malone Power Forward Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award, in addition to the Women's Starting Five.
