Broncos sweep Air Force for 14th win

10/7/2021 8:53:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Ohlinger and Pau combined for 25 kills to lead Boise State past Air Force.

USAFA, Colo. - Lauren Ohlinger and Kayly Pau combined for 25 of the Broncos' 46 kills to lead Boise State in a sweep at Air Force on Thursday night. In all three sets the Broncos slowly pulled away from the Falcons to secure their seventh sweep of the season 25-21, 25-21, 25-15.

The win improved Boise State to 14-3 overall and 3-2 in Mountain West Conference play with a Saturday afternoon encounter with the New Mexico Lobos at Albuquerque next up on the Broncos' schedule.

"Good, solid performance for our outside hitters Kayly and Lauren," said head coach Shawn Garus. "Lauren was also great from the service line applying a lot of pressure to Air Force. I think we were really focused and played a nice match on the road against a quality Air Force team."

Even though there were only nine ties and two lead changes in the entire match, the Broncos were unable to pull away in the first two sets as the Falcons kept it close.

The first set was a battle that went back and forth with Air Force maintaining a lead early. With the Blue and Orange trailing 8-6 in the first, Boise State began to assert itself using a 9-2 run to take control to go up 15-10. The Broncos were led by Ohlinger who recorded five points during the run with three kills and two service aces. She finished the period with seven kills — hitting .778 percent in the set — and two aces. The Falcons never recovered from that initial Bronco run.

Boise State did not trail in the second set and led by as many as six points when Air Force rallied to tie the score three times midway through the period at 15, 16 and 17 all. The Broncos responded with kills by Shae Duffy and Ohlinger to take a two-point lead. Boise State then refused to let Air Force back into the set as they held the lead down the stretch with Jessica Donahue finishing it off with two straight kills to end it at 25-21.

The third set was ugly for the Broncos to start as the Falcons raced out to a 7-1 lead. Boise State regrouped and rolled off a 6-0 run to tie it up at 7-7. Ohlinger had two kills and one service ace during that run followed by Donahue with two kills. The Blue and Orange then extended their run to 13-3 to take a 14-10 advantage, then cruised to the 10-point set win 25-15.

Ohlinger finished the contest with her sixth double-double of the season on 15 kills and 10 digs — both team highs. She also had the team highs for service aces with five and points with 20.5.

Pau was next, hitting .385 in the match on 10 kills with no errors on 26 attacks. She added four digs, two block assists and had 11 points.

They were followed by Donahue who hit .400 percent with eight kills, one block solo and four block assists for 11.0 points. Annie Kaminski hit a career and team-high .600 percent on six kills and no errors on 10 attacks.

Danielle Boss led the Bronco offense from the setter position with 38 assists to go with four kills, two service aces, eight digs and one block assist.
