Broncos come up short in San Jose

Boise State won the first set before the Spartans rallied to win the final three.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Boise State fell in four sets in a Mountain West Conference volleyball match at San Jose State Saturday afternoon. Boise State opened the match by winning the opening set in extra points, then watched as the Spartans seized the contest with wins in the final three sets. 

The first set was tight the entire way with 10 ties and four lead changes. Trailing 21-20, the Broncos rallied behind a 6-3 run down the stretch, capped by a Danielle Boss touch kill to the deep right corner to secure the 26-24 win. 

The final three sets were controlled by San Jose State who managed to keep a slim lead over Boise State nearly the entire way in the second and third sets. The one exception came early in the third set when the Broncos scored the first point. The fourth set was all Spartans as they raced out to a 5-1 advantage and never looked back. 

Lauren Ohlinger and Alyssa Wissinger tied for the scoring honors for the Blue and Orange with 17 points. Ohlinger's came on a team-high 14 kills, one service ace and four block assists; while Wissinger hit .381 percent for 10 kills, tied for the team high in service aces with two and had a team-best seven blocks, three were solos. 

Danielle Boss was next from the setter position finishing with seven kills to go with a double-double on 33 assists and 15 digs, both team highs. 

Rounding out the Broncos were Jessica Donahue who added six kills and six block assists; Paige Bartsch chipped in five kills, one service ace, eight digs and five block assists; Jordan Miller also had five kills to go with five digs and one block assist. Defensively, Jolei Akima recorded 10 digs. 

The loss in the final road match of the regular season for Boise State snapped a five-match win streak and dropped the Broncos to 20-8 overall and 9-7 in conference play. Meanwhile, San Jose State improved to 18-8 overall and 12-4 in league. 

Notables
  • Boise State's loss to the Spartans was the second of the year to San Jose State; however, the Broncos still own a slim advantage in the overall series 21-20.
  • Ohlinger's 14 kills gives the junior outside hitter 24th matches this season and 51 in her career with double-digit kills.
  • Boss' double-double is the 12th of the year for the senior setter and the 36th of her career, both are team highs.
  • Wissinger's seven blocks marked the 17th time this season she has had five or more blocks in a contest. 
  • Wissinger's three block solos is the third time this year she has recorded three in a match. 
  • Boise State's 13.5 blocks marks the 18th time that the Broncos have tallied double-figure team blocks in a match this fall.
